Baltimore suburbs have a very weird relationship with the city and its inhabitants. People in Dundalk, Parkville, Arbutus and Glen Burnie will cheer for the O’s, will have posters of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed in their homes and be the most racist mfs around who hate the city.

One thing nobody really tells you clearly enough is that addiction is not loyal to the substance. It will take whatever door is open. You shut down the drinking and suddenly food gets louder. Shopping gets louder. Attention gets louder. Lust gets louder. Even being “the helpful guy” can get weird if you’re using it to stay out of your own head. That messed with me early on because I wanted a cleaner story. I wanted alcohol to be the villain so I could beat the villain and move on. But it was deeper than that. The real issue was that I had trained myself to reach for something every time I felt restless, empty, ashamed, bored, or just uncomfortable in my own skin. So yeah, quitting drinking mattered. It saved my life. But it did not magically make me honest. That came later, and slower, when I started catching myself trying to get loaded on other things that looked more respectable from the outside. That’s when sobriety stopped being about one substance and started being about the whole machine. What got louder for you after the drink was gone?
