John Mearsheimer should re-read the section on appeasement in his book, “The Tragedy of Great Power Politics.” It’s towards the end of Chapter 5. He recommends against it. Elsewhere he is eloquent on the topic that nuclear powers frequently lose wars against non-nuclear states.

But reading Zelenskyy’s speech next to Putin’s is too much like reading Churchill’s speeches next to Hitler’s. At least Putin refrained from nuclear saber-rattling. The West needs to provide Ukraine with what it needs to win - and we need to offer Russia strategic stability.

Russia has legitimate grievances and I have written at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists about how the West should address them, by advancing strategic stability in Europe. For example removing sub-strategic weapons from Europe - Portugal to the Urals.
