@timurkuran Amen, Timur. This is the advice I give my students and my own children. Study with the best teachers. In learning to think deeply, critically, and independently, the instructor matters much more than the subject. And he or she will shape the student more by example than precept.

I’m often asked: which courses should I take? My reply: the instructor matters more than the subject. Choose teachers who sharpen your mind. Facts you can gather yourself; the ability to connect them requires training. UChicago’s new policy will make that harder.

@weiser_h78449 Harvard Law School has become a special place--one where top scholars across a spectrum of viewpoints engage each other and the students in ways that are robust and civil. Much credit is due to a string of outstanding deans: Elena Kagan, Martha Minow, John Manning, John Goldberg.

@McCormickProf Shocked they published this. Comms staffs at these law schools tend to be militant libs

A wonderful profile of the great Jennie Lichter in the Harvard Law Bulletin. Jennie, a Harvard Law graduate, is president of March for Life. Kudos to the editors of the Bulletin for publishing the profile. They'll take a lot of heat for it ... but it was exactly the right thing to do, and is yet more evidence that Harvard Law School is in the lead in recognizing achievement and distinction (in admissions, faculty hiring, and other ways) in an ideologically non-partisan manner. hls.harvard.edu/today/leading-…

Lincoln even defied parts of the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford. He wasn't wrong to do that. I'm not arguing for judicial supremacy. (I've been a critic of that idea, precisely on constitutional grounds.) But judicial *independence* is critically important. 5/

This isn't to say that Democrats or others shouldn't criticize the Court when they believe the justices have usurped the authority of the other branches or betrayed the Constitution. The historical record shows that such criticism has sometimes been warranted. So, criticize. 4/

Insane. Democratic Party leaders are explicitly pledging to pack the Supreme Court--increasing the number of justices from 9 to 13--the moment they get the presidency and control of the Senate. This would be the end of an independent judiciary in the United States of America. 1/

The longer I live, the clearer it becomes to me that people will have a religion, or something that plays the role in their lives played by religion in the lives of people of faith. The only question is what religion (or pseudo-religion) they will have, and whether it will be a good one or a bad one--one that upholds human dignity and teaches genuine virtue, or one that does not.
