This is the diametric opposite of environmental sustainability. It’s corporatism land grabbing and a huge wealth transfer facilitated by governments. As well as creating localised temperature increases, the majority of mass solar panels will end up in landfills after 25-30 years.

@JamesMelville For every unit of electricity produced solar panels emit four units of heat adding to atmospheric heating.

▪️ Total value of solar panels exported from China to the UK in the first half of 2023 alone = £300 million ▪️45% of UK imports of solar modules came from China in 2022 ▪️ The production of solar panels in the Xinjiang region linked to the alleged exploitation of Uyghur Muslims.

The Government will unleash a UK solar rooftop revolution. We want to bring this win-win technology to millions of addresses in the UK so people can provide their own electricity, cut their bills, and at the same time help fight climate change. ☀️ #cobssid=s" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theguardian.com/environment/ar…

@GeoffBeacon @CPRE Solar developers want to panel 12.5% our Newark & Sherwood’s farmland. This is disproportionate

@SamMaclaine @CPRE This is the impact in Newark and Sherwood. 10,000 acres of solar panels consuming 12.5% of the region’s farmland. This is equivalent to the size of Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester airports combined.

@CPRE Are you also advocating a roof-top first approach for Golf courses ? You didn't seem to be so keen on protecting the countryside from them 🤔

@SCoastSteve @CPRE Who does it cost 2.5 times more? The business model of the solar developers should not be a consideration when it comes to protecting the countryside.

Average cost of rooftop installs (I have 300kw) is about 2.5 x ground level large solar arrays. We want cheap power don't we? Plant a hedge and trees around the boundary and a solar farm becomes invisible. In the medium term we will find the screening hedgerows and the land covered by the solar array will become a haven for wildlife and flora. Look on the positive side.

@CPRE It would be nice to see the detail of Miliband’s plan to ensure that these are not simply hollow words

Campaigners opposed to a 2,500-acre solar farm said they were "shell-shocked" after the plan was approved by Ed Miliband. Opponents say the scheme takes some of the most productive land in the UK out of use, against the expert advice of the examiners. #CostOfNetZero 👉bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Food security must be protected. Solar panels should not be put on prime agricultural land. Put them on rooftops or brownfield land.

@tommlancaster Why do the ‘pro-solar’ lobby assume this article is anti-solar? Why don’t they push to exploit the ample roof space which is already available first? Rooftop solar mostly needs no planning permission and brings production closer to consumers.

@tommlancaster ‘Moderate’ for what? Grade 3b land is often perfect for growing cereals.

It then goes on to say that grade 3b land is in fact great When the reality is that it is 'moderate', as per the old MAFF guidance from 1988 Good for grass, and some cereals, mainly for animal feed So no real risk that we will need to import 'thousands of loaves of bread'...
