Russia has branded the Nobel Peace Prize-winning rights group Memorial an "extremist" organization. In this 2023 interview, co-founder Oleg Orlov told MT that he saw Soviet-style repressions making a comeback in Russia. themoscowtimes.com/2023/04/07/aga…

❗️ Zero out of 46 Protests Allowed: Crackdown on Internet Freedom Rallies Across Russia Protests for internet freedom were supposed to take place today across Russia, but not a single one happened. Authorities blocked them all, while pressure on organizers continues. According to @7x7journal, 46 applications in 40 cities across 28 regions were rejected for rallies against blocking Telegram. In #Yakutsk, activist Alexey Popov was detained. The reason for his detention remains unknown. In #Tomsk, activist Anton Isakov was detained on the day his planned protest. Police charged him with hooliganism, and he is currently being held at a police station. On March 20, Isakov was also handed a military draft notice. At least seven political groups attempted to organize rallies against blocking Telegram: the Candidates’ Headquarters, @YablokoParty, @rassvet_party, #CPRF, and others. In #Syktyvkar and #Volgograd applications were submitted by individuals. The highest number of rejections came in #Moscow, #StPetersburg, #Kazan, and #Irkutsk, where even multiple applications on different dates were denied. Authorities used a wide range of justifications: — “COVID restrictions” in Moscow, the #MoscowRegion, and St.Petersburg — “Drone attack risks” in #Vladimir, #Murom, #Krasnodar, #Volgograd, and #Voronezh — Claims that blocking is “lawful” in #Barnaul (#AltaiRegion), Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (#Kamchatka), and Tomsk. The most applications were filed in #Tatarstan and the Moscow Region, where the Candidates’ Headquarters alone proposed rallies in seven and five cities, respectively. #RussianPolitics #Censorship #Protests #Telegram #DigitalAuthoritarianism t.me/horizontal_rus…
