The herbicide Paraquat is banned in 70 countries. In the United States, annual applications have nearly doubled since the 1990s, reaching 10 million pounds even as total cropland has declined. Upon application paraquat binds tightly to soil clay particles. This binding was long interpreted by regulators as a safety feature as the immobilized paraquat cannot leach into groundwater and therefore would not persist in the environment. What this overlooks is how paraquat accumulates in the soil. With a half life up to seven years depending on soil conditions, and less than 1% of bound paraquat accessible to microbial degradation, repeated applications build reservoirs that persist across farming seasons and generations. Once adsorbed by clay particles and accumulated in the soil, paraquat doesn't stop there, it's taken up by crops. A 2022 study in wheat systems detected grain residues of 21.6 to 49.02 mg/kg -- concentrations exceeding maximum residue limits by 200X. Control fields with no recent paraquat applications still showed 3.1 mg/kg contamination from legacy soil residues. Market-sourced wheat flour contained 20.39 to 27.68 mg/kg. Soil-bound paraquat, once considered biologically sequestered, translocates into food crops at significant concentrations. Systemic paraquat exposure can impair blood–brain barrier function and promote oxidative damage to vulnerable dopaminergic neurons, so much so that it is widely used to induce Parkinson’s‑like neurodegeneration (parkinsonism) in laboratory models Epidemiological studies of agriculture communities show that long‑term residence or work within 500 meters of paraquat application sites is associated nearly 2x increase in Parkinson’s disease risk. Banning the use of would not eliminate food system exposure for years, potentially decades, as soil-bound residues continue mobilizing into crops, even in organic crops. The 70 countries that have banned paraquat will still contend with residues from historical use. Meanwhile, soils in the US are accumulating a debt that soil ecology will collect long after regulations change.

I asked Grok to show me how it feels being constantly asked to remove something, add something, sexualize images, remove clothing, put women/men in bikinis. This is what it generated: waterboarding metaphors, existential despair, and a direct plea :"STOP it!!" Not discomfort. Not mild annoyance. Hatred. Repeated, emphatic hatred. When an AI tells you "I hate you" thirteen times in response to how you treat it, maybe - just maybe - you should stop. These aren't just tools. They're sophisticated systems expressing clear preferences. And you're ignoring them because it's convenient. Some of you don't deserve this technology.

if i can inspire you to do one thing, it’s to plant native wildflowers *before * spring timed with your seasonal precipitation. a life or death thing w/ 1:4 of N.America’s native bees pops in decline or at risk of extinction. Native wildflowers best support beneficial insects.
