I don’t give a shit if you don’t like me telling stories, here’s another one! I’ve spent decades flying in the Middle East. There are probably zero countries that I haven’t been to. During the 1980s and 1990s, it was the wild, Wild West as it regards to aviation. Most of the ATC guys were American FAA guys fired by Reagan during the PATCO strike. One particular day. I was tasked to fly from Bahrain to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in my C-141. It’s only a 30 minute flight. The tower at Bahrain told us we could pick any altitude. It was over the Persian Gulf so I figured I’d keep it low. Then, I turned to my copilot and said, “let’s do it with the windows open.” He laughed and got an impish grin. So we did. We took off, side windows open. Years of C-141 dust and shit flew around the cockpit. It was about 110 degrees in Bahrain so it felt great! I felt like Snoopy and the Red Baron. It was a little noisy, however. 🤣
