Between the levels Luka, SGA and Wemby are at right now and where Jokic and Giannis were before they got hurt earlier in the season, I can’t remember the last time the NBA had a top five this deep. Not sure if it’s ever happened.

Lakers are now 10-1 in their last 11. But the Thunder are 13-1 in their last 14 and the Spurs are 20-2 in their last 22. It’s just a testament to how incredible those teams are that the Lakers can be playing this well and still not gain ground on them.

@Nbamed1313 I struggle with that because their biggest weakness is still San Antonio and OKC’s strength. They just really struggle with elite athleticism. Right now I feel better about them in the West than any non-OKC/SAS team, but those are just such tricky matchups for them.

@SamQuinnCBS Sam, you have one of the most reasonable basketball takes on NBA twitter. Realistically, are the lakers contenders this year? Especially after this win streak

As I think about cracking a joke about Luka having the most impressive scoring game involving the Miami Heat this season, it occurs to me that he’s probably the likeliest 84-point scorer in the NBA solely because of how badly his home crowd will want him to be the one to top Bam.

… Most MVP candidates aren’t the best defender on their own team and Luka certainly isn’t.
🪄🐴@Luka77_x

@SamQuinnCBS Shai isn't even the best defender on his own team that title would go to Dort and Caruso and he also has a DPOTY candidate in Chet who is able to clean up Shai's mistakes

The Wizards have Anthony Davis and Trae Young and didn't use either of them. Kyshawn George didn't play in that game either. Alex Sarr played 20 minutes. The issue wasn't a lack of talent, it was that they were using their tantastic C-team and it was poorly coached.

Tracy McGrady says Bam Adebayo dropping 83 points on the Wizards is proof that there isn’t enough talent in the league for an expansion (🎥 @dpshow )

This year? Something pretty substantial. I'm not sure what exactly that would entail to be honest just because so much of the season has already happened, but Luka would have to be leaps and bounds ahead of SGA the rest of the way just considering both teams are down to their last 13 games.

@SamQuinnCBS I've been skeptical of your argument, but appreciate you demonstrating your rationale - especially with prior MVP years. Maybe something else that would be helpful: If possible, what would it take for you to change your mind?

@Tysingerlaw This is a very interesting concept (and I wouldn't be surprised if teams have proprietary stuff on this), but it's also something that would need a lot of context. Teams will very offense run offense at the opposing star not because he's a bad defender, but to wear that guy out.

@SamQuinnCBS Someone who’s doing the advanced metrics should track ball movement in relation to the proximity of a specific defender. In other words, what defenders does the offense target to get the ball over? Versus what players does it run screaming the other direction from?

It's the Peter Principle of NBA Takes. A player keeps getting more and more praise until the praise is no longer warranted. Incredible, All-NBA, career year. That's where the praise should go. It always, inevitably, goes one level further, so unwarranted MVP talk.
Andy Bailey@AndrewDBailey

I cannot understand, for the life of me, the Jaylen Brown propaganda. The recent takes on him being so thoroughly divorced from reality is a disservice to the great season he’s having.

Meanwhile, there's the flip side of this where, because a bunch of worthy All-NBA guys miss out because they didn't play enough games, the 21st or 22nd best player will wind up with an All-NBA they probably shouldn't have gotten and create some unnecessary supermax drama.
Jared Weiss@JaredWeissNBA

There is no way the 65-game rule should still be there next year. It is clearly a terrible rule and as I have said all along, it will have a big negative impact on long term legacy when great players have emptier award resumes because they played like 6 less games than someone not as good. Guys dropping out of the MVP and All-NBA race because they are just short of an arbitrary line that their competitors are just above is BS.

I just never like this logic. It’s never as simple as “player does thing X, he gets MVP.” He’s competing against other players. In 2024 I just thought Jokic was better. In 2026 I think SGA is better. There’s no fixed criteria. No boxes every MVP has to check. It’s best guy wins.
Angel Saint-Hilaire@I_Am_Angel84

@SamQuinnCBS It just seems that like in 2023-2024 season when Luka puts up stats but team isn’t winning even when facing heavy injuries, voters saying that he needs to win games. Then to end the season he starts winning (Mavs won 16 of 18 to end season), and they just hold on to their votes.

If you’re disputing Luka’s First-Team All-NBA case, idk what to tell you, I just think you’re wrong. He has at the very least made himself a meaningful part of the MVP conversation. I haven’t gotten there on him vs SGA, but I might wind up picking him second.
Sam Quinn@SamQuinnCBS

My view on this year’s MVP race has been that SGA’s superior defense, efficiency and ability to limit turnovers edges out Luka’s slight volume edge and big playmaking and rebounding edges. I don’t care much about team record but SGA has that as well, with plenty of OKC injuries.
