The least competent people are often the most confident. This is known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people with limited skill or knowledge in a particular area dramatically overestimate their own abilities. The reason is simple yet paradoxical: the same skills needed to do something well are also the skills needed to accurately judge how well you’re doing it. Without that self-awareness, incompetent individuals remain blissfully unaware of their shortcomings — and become overly confident as a result. As Charles Darwin noted: “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.” On the flip side, truly skilled people often fall into the opposite trap. Because a task feels easy to them, they assume it must be easy for everyone else. As a result, experts tend to underestimate their own abilities relative to others, while the least competent loudly overestimate theirs. This creates a striking gap: the people who know the least are often the most sure of themselves, while the most competent frequently doubt their own superiority.

Innate mathematical talent exists. But talent is not a substitute for structure. Some people can build mathematical knowledge faster, more easily, and with less friction than others. Even so, genuine long-term strength depends on the quality of the hierarchy they build.

Many elegant high-level ideas in math only feel elegant after the lower-level machinery has become automatic. Without that fluency, students are often expected to appreciate architecture while still struggling with the bricks and mortar.

Everybody knows that everybody is cheating. Universities have so many people with the words "strategy" and "AI" in their titles yet on this issue, they can't seem to think through what is going to happen beyond the end of next week.

HOW AI WILL DESTROY UNIVERSITIES, by Paul Sagar As a university professor, attempting to police AI-generated essays will land you headfirst into the “toupée fallacy” trap. Imagine if you were to confidently proclaim that men who wear toupées always look bad, and would be better off just going bald. You’d be assuming a toupée can always be spotted. But the good toupées are precisely the ones you can’t spot. The same goes for student use of LLMs. Those who are effective at using the technology to cheat are precisely the ones getting away with it. Even when you do spot the coursework equivalent of a toupée, nothing can be done. Students always have plausible deniability: it’s their word against your gut instinct. The only tenable solution is the reinstatement of pen and paper exams, but this is unlikely to happen. University administrators now admit that we’re past the point of no return.
