AOC is getting lambasted for falsely saying she grew up in the Bronx. She actually grew up in Yorktown Heights of Westchester County in New York. Westchester is affluent. It already was when I grew up there years before AOC. The truth is she grew up as a rich spoiled brat.

@Bubblebathgirl You know there are poor people in wealthy communities, right? You literally just explained that the house she grew up in is worth $100k less than the low end of the area.

@PSinclairWrites If you don't (which seems likely), talk about where the book comes up short. The best advice is probably "you finished a book. Great. Put this one away for a while and start your next one. Think about x, y and z for being better next time. What did you learn from last time?"

@PSinclairWrites If you're talking to this person, ask them to tell you in a single sentence what the book is about. Then ask if they feel like they accomplished that story. If you agree with them, it's a decent book, and you can give some structural notes.

My wife volunteered me to read and comment on a coworker's first novel....and it's very obviously her first novel. How do I tell this woman that her book is not very good, without crushing her or making her give up writing?
