Viktor Orban is a notorious flip-flopper. He was an enthusiastic young communist in a secretarial role. He was funded and educated by George Soros, the very man he now heavily attacks, and even received a scholarship from him. Later, he became a pro-EU left-liberal. Then came his conservative era. And today, we know what he is: an illiberal autocrat, a puppet of the Russian president.
But it wasn't always like this, either. Orbán used to heavily criticize the Russians. He was well-known for his anti-Russian politics. The dramatic U-turn happened in 2009. At that time, as the president of Fidesz, he traveled to St. Petersburg to attend the 2009 congress of Putin's party. It was there that he met with Putin, who was running Russia as Prime Minister at the time. What exactly was said at that meeting remains one of the greatest mysteries in Hungarian politics to this day. Because ever since then, Viktor Orbán has been a loyal servant of Russian interests.
