Lady Chief Justice voices grave concerns over David Lammy’s jury reforms in a rare public intervention.
The head of the judiciary has raised security fears about the Government’s plan for judge-only trials, as the Justice Secretary presses ahead with restricting our ancient right to trial by jury.
Baroness Carr warns of an increased risk of judges being physically assaulted outside court.
Under Lammy’s plans, judges would sit without juries in medium-level trials, including violent offences and drug dealing.
FSU research shows defendants in speech-related cases are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court.
It is incredibly rare for the Lady Chief Justice to enter political debate.
