Fear narratives about the (nonexistent) threats of communism, fascism, authoritarianism, etc is what mobilizes now.

@thamosdeaf If you are interested primarily in modernism and post modernism, there are Black American writers who belong to those traditions. So Gass's omissions in that regard is....... rather surprising

I can’t recommend enough The William H. Gass Reader. I’ve read around half its contents and it’s such an extraordinary breadth and depth of thought and daring experimentation with form. Ultimately it’s a monument to a writer who loved writing and was absurdly good at it.

Even terraforming the Moon and Mars only gives us three reachable spheres — nowhere near enough diversification for long-term survival. A single catastrophe could wipe us all out because we all share the same atmosphere. The only real escape, he argues, is cracking physics beyond Einstein so we can get very far, very fast. Otherwise we’re stuck playing cosmic Russian roulette. It’s a sobering wake-up call about how dangerously misaligned our priorities have become.

@SpraynardTurds yeah I’m just going to see him every time he plays a show nearish to me until he dies because he’s the greatest living artist we have. don’t even care really if the set blows me away or not just want to see him out there in the world existing and making music.

@geoffwilt I remember seeing him at UCSB right after 9/11 with my dad and my stoner roommates kept ripping on me. Had been reading a buncha HST, as 21 yos do, and we always watched the Gilliam Fear & Loathing, and dude kept quoting “Why would I pay my hard earned money to see a corpse”
