Why are anemones in open habitats to begin with? These anemones host algae that require lots of light to photosynthesize, so being out in the open is important. We hypothesize that the mutualism between anemones and algae may be in part responsible for the resulting habitat.

Mix of good & bad from yesterday’s dive in the Upper #Florida Keys. Good: plenty of #corals looked mostly normal and healthy. Bad: lots of paling, #bleaching, tissue loss, & recent mortality in staghorn especially but also elkhorn, fire #coral totally bleached. It was 31.2-32C.

WHY is the water getting so hot in the Florida Keys and threatening FL's coral reef? It's the Florida Bay problem. FL Bay is shallow so when temps are hot, water is calm, and sun is out, FL bay gets extra hot - think puddle in the sun

The #Aiptasia life cycle is closed! A prerequisite to settlement of larvae is actively hunting prey, not #symbiosis. Thus, carnivory likely is an ancestral feature in the cnidarian gastrula life stage: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
