Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer mentioned the nickel spot when asked about needs on defense. He expands on that point here and mentions that the plan is to keep CB DaRon Bland on the outside. “We feel like he can shut down a side of the field.”

The “Big 6” defenders are the dream scenario for the #Cowboys at 12, but there’s a real chance they’re all gone. To me, Jeremiyah Love is the only offensive prospect graded high enough to create a true CeeDee Lamb–K'Lavon Chaisson type dilemma. Like Lamb, Love could sit clearly above the next best defender if that top group is wiped out. If anything, things may end up like the Tyler Smith–Lewis Cine situation. Cine was 13th on their board and the last 1st round grade available, but they still went with Smith. That kind of gap didn’t prevent them from leaping over a BPA. As much as I like Francis Mauigoa, they can’t keep spending premium picks on the offensive line. Jordyn Tyson has the talent, but the injury history is hard to ignore as his have been both serious and the lingering type injuries. After that, there’s not a big separation between the remaining offensive options and the next tier of defenders we talk about in the “wipeout” scenarios. That’s why I keep coming back to this: if you love a prospect at 20, you better be comfortable taking him at 12 if 1. the board gets wiped out, and 2. you’re not sold on going offense.

The Cowboys have the most first-round draft capital they've had in 20 years, need major help on defense, especially after the surprise departures of Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs, and could end up using both those picks on the two least important defensive positions.
