Scientists believe changing #Arctic conditions — where gray whales feed during the summer — may be forcing the species to adapt to unprecedented environmental changes. Our experts are taking proactive action to improve whale safety in the Bay. Learn more: bit.ly/4tfvHax.

This comes amid growing concern for the species, whose latest population report of 12,900 is the lowest since the 1970s. This follows a recently closed Unusual Mortality Event (UME) and continued population decline — over a 50% since 2016.

Gray Whales are currently heading north on their yearly migratory journey to the Arctic, stopping by San Francisco Bay to rest and feed along their route. Our researchers reported at least 6 gray whales in San Francisco Bay as of Monday, March 16.
