@Glen_Binnie @Sanny_Rudra This does actually happen! It's called the Christie Cup and after the Boat Race it's the second oldest inter-university sporting competition in England

Took me years to realise that Oxford and Cambridge aren’t even generally the two best university rowing teams. Just the establishment telling us it’s important.

Some favourites of mine in the images above: coats of arms of British universities; academic dress; uniforms of court officials; "notable ties".

I think in another life I would like to have been the person who designed collectible cigarette cards of really niche topics

@jakonian Wessex should include Devon (Cornwall should be its own thing) but not go all the way to London or Birmingham.

Good article in the Sunday Times that sums up the problem with the quarter zip and gilet brigade. Dress codes still exist: only now everyone looks like they're on their way to a mediocre 6th form college on the tube every morning. Cringe identikit slop. Grow up and put on a tie.

In completely unconnected news, today I have been yelled at by a cyclist and beeped at by a car for exercising my God-given right as an Englishman to walk along the King's Highways

If we cobbled the streets of central London we would achieve effective pedestrian priority without banning anything, and also restore a small part of the medieval city the Victorians wrecked

@shepherdmg @DanielJHannan While councils do seem to be a lost cause sadly, about five universities have brought their coat of arms back as their primary logo in the last couple of years. Warwick most recently. They've not always been heraldically perfect by any means, but it's an improvement.

This COP is set against an uneasy backdrop. Last year was the hottest on record, as global temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees. Despite this, many nations attending COP30 have yet to submit their net zero plans, and the US is not attending at all. So, is COP really worth it? This is the question on many commentators’ minds, but it ignores the significant achievements that COP has already made, and how it still remains the most effective tool for international climate action. If we are to have any hope of serious climate action, we have to come together and do what is possible. COP isn’t perfect, but it is collaborative and more effective than nothing. And when it works, by giving countries the freedom to act, not bog it down in red tape, it exhibits the best of international cooperation. ✍️@TeatherEdward capx.co/how-to-make-co…
