I'm not a fan of teacher's unions but I know that they are necessary. Teachers were extremely poorly paid before unions existed. Big city teacher's unions do not behave like that average town union. Actually, they are more like the workers unions that probably you in your family history benefited from. Workers unions were often violent, they were fighting for wages, guaranteed jobs, and they actually went on strike quite often. Jimmy Hoffa, head of the most well known of the unions, the Teamsters, were not to be messed with. Teachers, in general, have been a lot more civilized but in the process they have paid for not standing up against what has gone on in the schools for the last 55 years. Perhaps if they had, you would not have the education system that you have today.
