Let’s talk about US immigration policy.
I’m tired of the lie that the Biden administration has “an open border.” This simply is not the case. Let’s all admit that US immigration policy is flawed, but also admit that the US has a responsibility to help protect asylum seekers and not harm those who are merely looking to come here for a better life.
The Biden Administration detained and expelled 2.28 million people under Title 42, after the Trump administration detained and expelled just 400,000. Title 42 expired because the COVID public health emergency ended.
The main difference between Biden and Trump’s policies were that Trump implemented a “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers. His administration returned about 70,000 asylum seekers to Mexico. Of those 70,000 people, including many women and children, it's estimated that over 1,500 were kidnapped, raped, and/or physically abused in Mexico.
The other difference between Trump and Biden policies, were that Trump allowed for immigrant parents to be deported without their children. At least 3,900 children were separated from their parents under Trump’s policy. This deterred a lot of people from coming, but also orphaned almost 4,000 children. Biden reversed this practice.
Trump wanted to build a border wall and started building fencing in many locations along the border. The Biden administration has actually continued to do this against the desires of many Democrats.
So no, the border is no more open than it was under Trump. The only difference is that more immigrants are trying to come to America under Biden, because they aren’t as scared. They aren’t afraid of having their children torn away from them and potentially lost, and they aren’t afraid of being forced to remain in Mexico where they have an estimated 2-3% chance of getting kidnapped or raped.
If you consider not putting immigrant children’s lives in danger to be “opening up the border,” then that’s your opinion. I consider that “caring for humanity,” and “protecting children.”
We need better policy, but that begins with both sides stopping the attacks on each other and working together for real solutions that don't result in children and women being harmed. It means allowing more immigrants to come here legally, and it means stopping the demonization of people who come here. Can we all agree on that?
