Unpopular Opinion: Paying a soon to be 35 year old 8 million a year for 4 years would handicap this franchise for years to come. I love Stammer and this feeling sucks, but in the end the right decision was made for both parties.

Guentzel may be 4 years younger, but he signed for 3 years longer, at a million more (and Stamkos was offering a discount beyond even that).

And before anyone says, “Stamkos got 8 million, we couldn’t pay that!!!” You have no idea what his ask was to stay in Tampa. And they were willing to pay Jake Guentzel, an outsider to the team culture, 9 million, so…..

If Stamkos is allowed to walk away, especially after clearing space by trading away a player who could’ve been a significant piece for the future, that’s a tough one to be OK with. Fans have dealt with a lot of salary cap sacrifices. Your captain shouldn’t be one of them.
