I held a coordination call on the situation in Ukraine. As of today, Ukrainian energy workers and repair crews have fully restored the energy system to its pre-incident state before Saturday’s technical failure. The system is operating stably. However, given the extremely cold weather and the impact of Russian strikes, all challenges remain serious. Over the past 24 hours, there were new Russian attacks on energy facilities in frontline and border communities. At the same time, there were no targeted strikes by Russian missiles or “shaheds” against energy infrastructure. As on previous days, the Russian army remains focused on terror against our logistics – primarily railway infrastructure. In particular, there were strikes in the Dnipro region and in Zaporizhzhia, specifically targeting railway facilities. During today’s coordination call, specific tasks in this regard were set for the Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Minister of Defense, and the Head of Ukrzaliznytsia. I expect these tasks to be carried out today. In Kyiv, more than 200 buildings are still without heating, mainly due to accidents. Crews from many regions of Ukraine have been deployed for the repair work, with more than two hundred such repair crews working in total. I instructed the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, as well as local administrations, to inspect the operation of all assistance and warming points across Ukraine. Regardless of how actively these points have been used in recent days, they must be fully prepared throughout the entire cold spell for any possible developments. Regional authorities have also been tasked with checking all base telecom stations. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, one in ten stations does not function during power outages, particularly often in rural areas. Communications must be stable. A separate instruction was given to Ukrenergo regarding part of the Odesa region: brown-outs must be adjusted to account for the significant number of homes with electric heating. The situation with outages remains difficult in Kropyvnytskyi and the region, Poltava region, Dnipro region, Cherkasy region, as well as in communities along the border with Russia. Everything possible is being done to support people. I thank all employees of energy companies, utility services, emergency and repair crews, every business – everyone who is working for people, supporting their community, and helping our entire country get through this difficult time.

Falklands War, 43 years ago tonight on our first attempt to move to Mount Kent, I remember sitting in the back of a blacked out helo, confined and strapped in, while the aircraft lurched sickeningly as the pilots fought against a blizzard - one of many anxious moments to come! 🫡

Lots of people have been asking why climb Everest (especially in 7 days). This wasn’t just a personal challenge, it was driven by something bigger. This nation is powered by an incredible ecosystem of volunteers, many of whom I have had the privilege to meet in Birmingham and across the UK. These are the men and women who show up, day in and day out, not for recognition or reward, but because they are dedicated and resilient. They go above and beyond their personal and professional commitments to deliver for something bigger. As a Minister why can’t I do something above and beyond my professional role to have an impact. I was always taught from the best leaders I had the privilege to learn from, don’t ask others to do anything you aren’t prepared to do yourself. This was my way of giving back and demonstrating that I too can spend time above my personal and professional life to support something bigger. There is another reason. Raising awareness and resources for a unique community who also go above and beyond for our nation. The countless brave men and women who serve, and have served our country, who afford us the security and stability our nation requires to thrive. They deserve our continuous support. And why seven days —- do everything you can to the best of your ability. My time in the military taught me to always to try and be the best version of myself and pursue excellence. I hold these to be central tenants of success. We may have reached the top of the world, punishing as it was, in record time but our mission to raise resources and awareness for veterans and armed forces charities across the UK, and to deepen the ties between us all, has just begun and we will continue until we reach that goal. I hope many of you will join us on the next phase of this mission.
