Last year, 23‑year‑old Alex suddenly fell seriously ill while at university in Liverpool. He underwent emergency brain surgery and was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumour, the most aggressive kind. Alex is a medical student with his whole future ahead of him. He’s responded well to surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy - but after just three more months, he’ll reach the end of NHS treatment options. Now, Alex’s doctors are advising a promising immunotherapy treatment abroad, not yet available on the NHS.
