"Shai isn’t particularly strong or quick, truth be told. I’m lucky enough to talk to more than a handful of guys who have defended him many times over the past few years, and no one ever mentions either of those physical gifts. Instead, it’s his craft, his sense of timing, his angle changes and angles of attacks, and his feel for what the defender is going to do before it happens. For all that to be productive and efficient to the level of SGA’s game, he has to be incredible with the ball in his hands. There are 16 players scoring 25 or more points per game. Among them, SGA has the third lowest number of turnovers, trailing only Kawhi Leonard and Lauri Markkanen, who are not guards.
The threat of his ability to make shots at an efficient rate everywhere alarms defenders to the point where they panic, or gamble, all too often, sending Shai where he most wants to go anyway, the line.
Being strong or super quick is a talent.
Being shifty with the ball, stopping and starting, and owning an incredibly tight handle: those are skills."
