Inspired by the Italians, the British WWII Spec Ops Chariot human torpedo was a two-man stealth weapon operated by frogmen. It was responsible for sinking the Italian cruiser Ulpio Traiano in Palermo on Jan 3rd, 1943. The Mark I hit 3.5 knots top speed on battery power with 7-8 hours endurance, and carried a detachable 600-pound Torpex warhead. Crews rode exposed like on horseback, breathing via rebreathers to sneak into harbors from submarines.
Despite their high technical risk and many failed missions due to equipment malfunctions or harsh weather, the Chariot is considered the direct ancestor of modern Swimmer Delivery Vehicles (SDVs) used by special forces like the SBS and US Navy SEALs.🫡
