The vice mayor of Coral Springs- the town next to Parkland- was just killed in an act of gun violence. I’m stunned I was literally texting with her 48 hours ago about her future politcal plans. She had such a promising future. This is so incredibly sad.

This is her husband’s Instagram. His bio is “God | Husband | Armed.” Another violent man who claims to be a dedicated Christian and husband. I can’t imagine the fear and betrayal she must have felt. Her brother died from suicide only three months ago and was one of the survivors of the Douglas High School shooting. I am heartbroken for her parents who have now lost both children in such a short time and from such devastating circumstances. This is a heartbreaking loss.

38 yr old Haitian-American Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, FL Nancy Metayer Bowen was tragically murdered. Bowen was the 1st Black woman elected to her city’s commission focusing on community health and environmental equity into local governance. She was shot by her husband. This is not just a tragic loss, but the devastating reality of gendered violence, one that took a Black woman leader, a Haitian daughter of the diaspora, and public servant whose presence was deeply meaningful.
