Hollywood’s favorite story: the broke outsider who self-financed an $80k movie on credit cards. The receipts: a ~$1M elite education, $330k+ in grants on her prior film, and a father - a Chinese real-estate and equity investor - credited as an executive producer. @TwextMex @the_transit_guy the mission system in SA is just a trail alongside the river. All of the rest of the city (miles and miles and miles of suburb) is sprawling dispersed neighborhoods connected by highways and roads with a focus on car-dependency

While nearly the same population, Barcelona occupies 8% of the size of San Antonio, TX. Barcelona also has 8 subway lines within its borders as well. Sprawl matters.

@loganxfarmer @the_transit_guy The design of San Antonio is built up, over and around the underlying Spanish mission system. Modern SA is the legacy and result of Spain and Barcelona using it as a siphon to drive riches to itself to build and construct its own city.

@TwextMex @the_transit_guy Well the design of modern day SA is specifically a product of American capitalism. Car-dependency and sprawling suburbs are our own American problem. Spanish colonizers are evil and dastardly but this specific comparison is pretty valid.
