Impossible to hire litigators in SoCal right now. I’ve heard unemployment is less than 1% Never a better time to go to law school than now

@_MattHuff @will_alverson @aphysicist So your calculus is that robots will build everything, onshore everything (has to for your argument), and displaced jobs will all be hired to service said robots and supply chains. And you as an engineer on synchro will be side by side with them when that gets automated?

Putting aside the very relevant histories, I’ll play your predict the future game: All those robots in the warehouses? Need communications, charging, parts, cleaning, etc. Jobs that didn’t exist before. And then new supply chains for those new things! I’ll even give you a very real example from my work: I automated a permit review process for my city. Did this eliminate the reviewer’s job? No! Instead they are now able to review more permits and faster! More things get built and no jobs were lost!

@the_transit_guy @aphysicist Warehouse worker in Lynchburg, Tennessee loses job due to automation. The more efficient utilization of capital from this lowers prices, increasing demand. Worker gets a better-paying job at an electronics company in Baltimore to meet this new demand.

@kane Kane, can you give me one or two job titles that many of the 600k Amazon fulfillment workers will do given this is a non issue? Just one or two job positions and their duties.

These populists would have us still using horses if they had their way. The apocryphal story has Friedman visiting a construction site and asking why the crew is using shovels instead of earthmovers. When told this is a “jobs program,” he replies something like: “Oh, I thought you were trying to build a canal. If it’s jobs you want, then you should give these workers spoons instead of shovels.”
Bernie Sanders@BernieSanders

Jeff Bezos, worth $234 billion, plans to replace 600,000 Amazon workers with robots. Now, he wants to spend $100 billion to fully automate not just his warehouses, but factories in the U.S & other countries. Oligarchs are waging all out war against workers. FIGHT BACK.

@JMGregorchuk I mean if your logic is the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know, that’s entirely defensible. But let’s not pretend electing a man who is literally running on NIMBYism is pro-housing and/or transit (now used to upzone).

A lot of voters don't actually care about results. Thats why blue LA politicians claim they care about housing and lower rents, but red Texas politicians actually lower rents for their constituents. Same for public transit. DSA folks claim to love transit, but they love lawlessness more, which kills transit. Then they turn around and call law-and-order folks racist Neanderthals, but it turns out... If you enforce the law and kick crack heads off the bus, more people ride and public transit is better.

Who hates public transit: DSA or Pratt? The DSA folks allow transit to be an unmitigated disaster for Angelenos. Pratt wants to kick homeless crack heads off so grandma can go to the grocery store in peace. DSA = Less riders, less revenue, more costs, more public transit hate. Pratt = More riders, more revenue, less costs, and more public transit love.
Hayden@the_transit_guy

@LA_Multi_Fam This is why it’s very important to vote for the man who hates public transit 👍

@redeemedYIMBY @aphysicist I will ask the same question I've asked at least 3 times in this thread. Can you give me an example of what is a better job for a displaced Amazon worker in 2026, either in the short term, or the "long run" you speak about. Just one job title.

@the_transit_guy @aphysicist Efficiency creates new economic activity, since more capital is being freed up to be used elsewhere. It might cause short term disruption but it's a net positive in the long run.

@_MattHuff @will_alverson @aphysicist So Matt, break my mindset. Give me an example of a job that one of the 600k people displaced will do. Don't give me a historical approach, these are happening now. It's "off target" to literally not be able to list a single job for labor displacement that's happening now.

@will_alverson @the_transit_guy @aphysicist Hayden has a fixed pie mindset but in reality the pie gets bigger! We can dig more, cut more, create more with the same input Ditch Digger -> Excavator Operator Machinist -> CNC Operator Etc. Agreed I like his stuff usually but this take is oddly off target.

@aphysicist So Amazon fulfillment workers should be advised to apply to which company/link? I know a lot of people who work at said facilities and I am sure they'd love to work for your company.

@will_alverson @aphysicist With all due respect, I'm asking for 1-3 job titles that will be created for the excess of 600k workers who will be displaces. Give me an example of the "safer and higher paying job" you're talking about, please.

Manufacturer here Theres some good reports from the MIT industrial performance center if you want an academic level deep dive that i will link at the bottom here. Also want to share my observations Something i see, and is also experienced by every single customer and vendor i speak with, is that people dont want to work these jobs *as they are today* Nobody can find people to do the work as it has been done for the past few decades and everyone is trying to hire The companies who are not having this issue are more highly automated, creating safer work environments where employees are paid more, allowing the business to scale faster. @HadrianInc is a great example, but i see countless smaller examples like this just in the neighborhood. The formula is simple: more automated work = safer and higher paying jobs and lower prices + faster lead times for customers Meaning higher returns per dollar invested in employees and thus more incentive to hire more employees Here’s the research: ipc.mit.edu/wp-content/upl…

@aphysicist So just so I understand, the automation of 600k jobs will create more jobs based on a book, in which you cannot give me a real life example of what displaced worker would do?

@loganb With all due respect Logan I think the inverse is easily true that being on this app would have you believe that people love tech leaders. Populism is quite popular on both sides of the aisle, so I’m not sure how Bezos would be well regarded tbh

I’m skeptical working class voters have any opinion on tech and tech bros. Look at Amazon having insane consumer support. The anti-tech slopulism is driven by an internecine grievance of educated elites getting economically outcompeted by their tech peers.
Chamber of Progress@ProgressChamber

Anti-tech populism meant to win back working-class voters risks undermining jobs, innovation, and competitiveness. Democrats should focus on outcomes, not performative confrontation. Read more in @DaveV15's latest: pub.bluehorizonproject.org/p/lose-lose-po…
