The Lodz ghetto was established #OTD 30 April 1940.
The second-largest ghetto in German-occupied territory, it was also the most isolated from its surroundings and other ghettos.
As information about the mass-murder became known, Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski, the controversial chairman of the Judenrat, saw labor for the Germans as a path to survival and established a production system that employed the Jews of the ghetto — including children. However, the Germans regarded the ghetto's industrial output as a mere pause in the extermination process; deportations from the ghetto to the Chelmno death camp commenced in January 1942.
