Our Fellow Prof @saobettencourt delivered her inaugural lecture today at @UCLIoN on epigenetics. We’ve supported her career, from PhD studentship to Senior Fellowship, and she now co-leads the DEMON Network’s Genetics & Omics group. We couldn’t be prouder! #ARUKfunded

Congratulations to Dr Patrick Lewis and his new PhD student! Over the next 3 years they’ll take a bioinformatics approach to study gamma secretase and its interactions with APP. #ARUKfunded

How is it that Parkinson's name has been perpetuated in our language, but the man himself has been forgotten? Do you know where the two London memorials to James Parkinson are located? What do you know about the man himself? Nadeem Toodayan and @ajlees have written a brilliant new article sharing the details and the history not only of the memorial, but of the man. Key Points: - The authors suggest that the James Parkinson (1755–1824) memorial at Hoxton square, London may be one of the most visited of sites in London (honoring a medical doctor). - There are actually two memorials for Parkinson. - An inscribed marble memorial tablet at St Leonard's Church. - A historical blue plaque marking the site of Parkinson's birthplace and "former home practice." - It took time and the words of the late great neurologist Charcot for future generation to more fully realize his contributions. - In the mid-20th century two memorials were placed. - Dr. Arthur Daniel Morris wrote his biography in the Lancet in 1955. - Love this piece of history included by the authors, "the formal Saturday, September 17, 1955, unveiling ceremony, the presiding Vicar Reverend Meredith Davies stated that although Parkinson's name has been perpetuated in our language the man himself has been forgotten.” - He was described as “an enthusiastic seeker after truth” who “eagerly shared new discoveries and interpreted them in terms which the plain man could understand.” - His grandson shared in his speech that "Dr. Parkinson was deeply interested in the social plight of mankind, as well as in their individual medical troubles." My take: BRAVO to Toodayan and Lee's for seeking out the source documents and for retelling the story of the 'man' whose name has become part of our everyday language. We must consider that – forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit – perhaps at some time it will help to remember even these things. …mentdisorders.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/md… #Parkinsons

If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful towards the powerless, then you have deeply, deeply misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.
