I hope that machine learning will lead to a new era of medical publishing that embraces subjective viewpoints, expert opinion and top notch essays from both physicians and patients as well as original clinical research

@ProfRobHoward Their benefit should be described as minimal anything else is hyperbole
English

The fundamental problem for lecanemab and donanemab is that it is almost an exaggeration to describe their benefits over 18 months as “modest” and from what little the companies have chosen to tell us about long-term extension data it looks like they do not modify disease course.

Politics vs Evidence? “The independent appeal panel has ruled that some elements the committee used to inform its decision-making in relation to the cost-effectiveness of donanemab & lecanemab need further consideration.” thetimes.com/article/27f32f…

@doctor_oxford @covidinquiryuk @MattHancock @BorisJohnson Might be the moment for the Health Minister to recognise the contribution of those involved in more than words
English

Today's publication of the @covidinquiryuk report into Covid's impact on the NHS comes as bittersweet relief for those of us who worked in those often hellish times.
Finally - thankfully - someone in authority has called out the incessant lies from @MattHancock & @BorisJohnson that the NHS “coped” during 2020/21 & “was not overwhelmed”.
No, says Lady Hallet. Covid’s impact was “devastating”. Furthermore: “On a number of occasions, [the NHS] teetered on the brink of collapse and only coped thanks to the almost superhuman efforts of healthcare workers and all the staff who support them.”
How those lies incensed us at the time.
Disgusting, dangerous lies that encouraged the public to believe that ventilators were never rationed, that patients never died at home because there weren’t enough ambulances to reach them, that staff never collapsed and left the NHS for good, broken by the brutality of those Covid wards.
“There was clearly overwhelm,” says Lady Hallet. “Whatever word one chooses, healthcare systems were placed under intolerable strain. Patients could not be admitted to hospital and, in particular, into intensive care units. This continued for wave after wave of the virus.”
Shame on you, Johnson & Hancock, for spouting endless self-serving populist lies while decent NHS doctors and nurses did their level best for patients - as did so many other magnificent key workers. We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

I mean, I once ditched the last day of a conference in Liverpool to do a day trip to Scotland. No regrets.

academic conferences are crazy because it’s like Let’s go to the most beautiful place in the world and then look at powerpoints for 12 straight hours

@GjaMacphee @musicandroots I tried always to take a trip on Metro/ tram preferably to the city’s best known necropolis and then on to the botanical garden

@okeh_suedehead At least you had a dig!
Liverpool's season has been dominated by insecurity, fear and imbalance despite an outlay of half a billion pounds. Very funny to watch Arne Slot's change in pitchside body language last night but it may yet reprieve him

@ajlees Good morning, Andrew. Sun’s up & it’s hot already. Yep, I wish, handed a lesson, defensively inept & against a side of that attacking prowess, you get punished. A big Summer reset required. I’ve seen many defeats, & some heavy drubbings, one more doesn’t hurt. Vinyl therapy soon.
English

Caught the game up in North Park with some Mags. That penalty knocked us, but we were masters of our own downfall. Woeful defending at times. Hopefully, lessons learned and a summer reset. 80 degrees + and cooking. Back on the vinyl trail tomorrow. #HWTL

@alonso_chu64256 @TheAnfieldWrap @onepeloton For me he is very lightweight and keeps missing sitters yet the pundits and many fans enthuse over his odd clever little pass.
How I miss Luisito and I would rather have Darwin than Gakpo. They added a badly needed fire on the pitch especially with a gentle Dutch manager
English

@ajlees @TheAnfieldWrap @onepeloton Every player has been diabolical, and Wirtz certainly isn't the worst one. In fact he's been one of our better players. Maybe look at the fact this coach hasn't got a clue how to set up in this league now the team is 100% playing his way.
English

“He looks to me now like a former Liverpool manager”
“I think if and when he leaves Liverpool Football Club, he’ll still go on to have success at other clubs”

@AnfieldWatch Wirz is a big problem he has shown very little and looks lightweight and McAllister and Gakpo should both be on the bench
