Join us in congratulating Alexandra Lancaster on submitting her PhD thesis! Her thesis is titled: "Tendon attachment optimisation in Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty and the effect on shoulder stability and range of motion." Alexandraโ€™s research focused on how to restore external shoulder rotation in patients who have severe rotator cuff damage and require reverse shoulder replacement surgery. Through this research, she identified positive results showing that tendon transfer strategies can significantly improve shoulder function after surgery. Reflecting on the most surprising aspect of her research, Alexandra noted the sensitivity of shoulder mechanics: "๐šƒ๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š–๐š˜๐šœ๐š ๐šœ๐šž๐š›๐š™๐š›๐š’๐šœ๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š๐š’๐š—๐š๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š ๐šŠ๐šœ ๐š‘๐š˜๐š  ๐š–๐šž๐šŒ๐š‘ ๐šœ๐š’๐š–๐š™๐š•๐šข ๐š›๐šŠ๐š’๐šœ๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐šŠ๐š›๐š– ๐šŒ๐š‘๐šŠ๐š—๐š๐šŽ๐š ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š›๐šŽ๐šœ๐šž๐š•๐š๐šœ. ๐™พ๐š—๐šŽ ๐š๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐š˜๐š— ๐š ๐š˜๐š›๐š”๐šŽ๐š ๐š ๐šŽ๐š•๐š• ๐š ๐š’๐š๐š‘ ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐šŠ๐š›๐š– ๐š๐š˜๐š ๐š—, ๐š‹๐šž๐š ๐šŒ๐š˜๐š—๐š๐š›๐š’๐š‹๐šž๐š๐šŽ๐š ๐š–๐šž๐šŒ๐š‘ ๐š•๐šŽ๐šœ๐šœ ๐š ๐š‘๐šŽ๐š— ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐šŠ๐š›๐š– ๐š ๐šŠ๐šœ ๐š•๐š’๐š๐š๐šŽ๐š." One of her greatest challenges was coordinating the experimental lab testing. Organising surgical time, equipment, and facilities while aligning multiple schedules was far more complex than expected, and she remains incredibly grateful to everyone who assisted with their time and expertise. Fadzai's research focused on developing and evaluating a portable EEG device designed to improve contact impedance in hair-bearing regions of the scalp. Her work included designing an adaptive electrode mechanism to reduce contact impedance, incorporating it into a portable device designed for inclusivity. The ultimate goal is to provide accessible diagnostic technology for rural areas across Africa where clinical EEG access is limited. Reflecting on the most surprising aspect of her research, Fadzai noted an unexpected discovery in the validation process: "๐šƒ๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š–๐š˜๐šœ๐š ๐šœ๐šž๐š›๐š™๐š›๐š’๐šœ๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š๐š‘๐š’๐š—๐š ๐™ธ ๐š๐š’๐šœ๐šŒ๐š˜๐šŸ๐šŽ๐š›๐šŽ๐š ๐š ๐šŠ๐šœ ๐š๐š‘๐šŠ๐š, ๐š๐š‘๐š˜๐šž๐š๐š‘ ๐™ธ ๐š’๐š—๐š’๐š๐š’๐šŠ๐š•๐š•๐šข ๐šŠ๐šœ๐šœ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š ๐™ด๐™ด๐™ถ ๐šŸ๐šŠ๐š•๐š’๐š๐šŠ๐š๐š’๐š˜๐š— ๐š›๐šŽ๐šš๐šž๐š’๐š›๐šŽ๐š ๐š’๐š—๐š๐šŽ๐š›๐š—๐šŠ๐š•๐š•๐šข ๐š๐šŽ๐š—๐šŽ๐š›๐šŠ๐š๐šŽ๐š ๐š—๐šŽ๐šž๐š›๐šŠ๐š• ๐šŠ๐šŒ๐š๐š’๐šŸ๐š’๐š๐šข, ๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š๐šŠ๐šŸ๐šŽ๐š›๐šœ ๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š— ๐š–๐šŽ๐šŠ๐š—๐š’๐š—๐š๐š๐šž๐š•๐š•๐šข ๐šŸ๐šŽ๐š›๐š’๐š๐šข ๐šŽ๐š•๐šŽ๐šŒ๐š๐š›๐š˜๐š๐šŽ ๐šŒ๐š˜๐š—๐š๐šŠ๐šŒ๐š ๐š’๐š–๐š™๐šŽ๐š๐šŠ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ ๐šŠ๐š—๐š ๐š–๐šŽ๐šŒ๐š‘๐šŠ๐š—๐š’๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š• ๐š’๐š—๐š๐šŽ๐š›๐š๐šŠ๐šŒ๐šŽ ๐š™๐šŽ๐š›๐š๐š˜๐š›๐š–๐šŠ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ." Her research proposes a risk-based, class-specific roadmap to optimise clinical investigation pathways, ensuring that regulatory hurdles do not become barriers to patient justice and life-saving technology. Reflecting on the most surprising aspect of her research, Jessica noted the unique challenges faced by local innovators: "๐šƒ๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š–๐š˜๐šœ๐š ๐šœ๐šž๐š›๐š™๐š›๐š’๐šœ๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š๐š’๐š—๐š๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š ๐šŠ๐šœ ๐š๐š‘๐šŠ๐š ๐š•๐š˜๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š• ๐š–๐šŠ๐š—๐šž๐š๐šŠ๐šŒ๐š๐šž๐š›๐šŽ๐š›๐šœ ๐š˜๐š ๐š‘๐š’๐š๐š‘๐šŽ๐š›-๐š›๐š’๐šœ๐š” ๐š๐šŽ๐šŸ๐š’๐šŒ๐šŽ๐šœ ๐šŠ๐š›๐šŽ ๐š˜๐š๐š๐šŽ๐š— ๐š›๐šŽ๐šš๐šž๐š’๐š›๐šŽ๐š ๐š๐š˜ ๐š˜๐š‹๐š๐šŠ๐š’๐š— ๐š›๐šŽ๐š๐šž๐š•๐šŠ๐š๐š˜๐š›๐šข ๐šŠ๐š™๐š™๐š›๐š˜๐šŸ๐šŠ๐š• ๐š๐š›๐š˜๐š– ๐š๐š˜๐š›๐šŽ๐š’๐š๐š— ๐š“๐šž๐š›๐š’๐šœ๐š๐š’๐šŒ๐š๐š’๐š˜๐š—๐šœ ๐š‹๐šŽ๐š๐š˜๐š›๐šŽ ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ๐šข ๐šŒ๐šŠ๐š— ๐šŽ๐šŸ๐šŽ๐š— ๐šŠ๐šŒ๐šŒ๐šŽ๐šœ๐šœ ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š–๐šŠ๐š›๐š”๐šŽ๐š ๐š’๐š— ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ๐š’๐š› ๐š˜๐š ๐š— ๐šŒ๐š˜๐šž๐š—๐š๐š›๐šข." One of her greatest challenges during the process was recruiting participants from specific stakeholder groups, which required a highly rigorous approach to data analysis and interpretation to ensure the integrity of the study's findings. Jessica was supervised by Dr. Heidi Matisonn from the Ethics Lab and Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu.
