#TeamCSIR recently hosted a series of stakeholder events at their Cottesloe Mining Laboratories and the Kloppersbos Fire and Explosion testing and training facility North of Pretoria. Both sessions were aimed at enhancing the visibility of these unique facilities, through which the CSIR supports the mining industry’s pursuit of Zero Harm. It also offered valuable opportunities to invite feedback from key stakeholders on CSIR’s services how we can improve to better meet industry needs. Through these facilities, the CSIR demonstrates its commitment to serving the industry and driving innovation focused on fostering a healthier and safer #mining industry in South Africa.
The Cottesloe Mining Laboratories continue to support the functional performance evaluation of safety-critical mining equipment through the Self-Contained Self-Rescuer, Mechanical, and Rope Testing labs. Meanwhile, at the Kloppersbos facility, CSIR hosts weekly fire and explosion safety training seminars and offer a range of services, including dust explosibility testing, fire exposure testing and competency-based training in mine emergency response.

📢The latest edition of #ScienceScope features stories on world-class #innovation underpinned by specialised facilities.
Learn how Africa’s first large-scale continuous flow pilot plant can help make pain relief drugs more affordable and how fibreglass composites used in automotive trims, such as boot liners, can be replaced with hemp fibre composites developed and tested at the CSIR. We support local manufacturers in developing their own microencapsulation technologies to protect sensitive components in health and cosmetic products and have commissioned a hot isostatic press facility for the densification of metal powders through elevated heat and pressure, transforming them into solid, high-performance components.
Contact our experts to explore how these and other specialised facilities can strengthen your competitiveness.

Thank you for joining us on 3 to 5 March 2026 for exclusive discussions on South Africa’s Waste Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) Roadmap.
If you missed the Waste RDI Roadmap Conference, we have you covered. The recordings are now available on the #TeamCSIR YouTube channel.
🎥Watch them all here: youtube.com/playlist?list=…
Excellent talks by experts under “human-centred”, “organic waste”, and “metals, e-waste and plastics” themes showcased 15 of the 59 grant projects’ impact and reach, forming part of the RDI Roadmap - a 10-year national strategy led by the @dstigovza.
Funding from the DSTI has made it possible to scale up these investments to strengthen capacity and support of waste recovery, reuse and recycling efforts in South Africa.
We reached nearly 400 online attendees, proving that a growing #circulareconomy agenda is in full momentum, and that waste can be converted into valuable materials and beneficiation towards a circular economy.
