#TeamCSIR demonstrated how research and #innovation are contributing to a more resilient, sustainable and inclusive #transport system for South Africa at #SATC2026, taking place at the CSIR ICC from 6-9 July 2026. CSIR researchers shared insights on #climateresilient rural road infrastructure, safer road maintenance practices, data-driven approaches to road safety, #sustainablemobility, aviation innovation and gender-responsive transport planning. They also showcased solutions, including smart traffic lights, the traffic conflict tool developed at the Transport Safety Laboratory, and asphalt and pavement testing technologies that support safer and more reliable transport networks. On Saturday, 4 July 2026, #TeamCSIR showcased a range of cutting-edge technologies at the launch of National Science Month 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology. This year’s #NationalScienceMonth2026 is held under the theme, “Science, technology and innovation for everyone”. NSM, an initiative of the @dstigovza, is designed to celebrate science and its significant contributions to society. The CSIR featured innovations at the launch included Television White Space deployment, along with complementary projects that provide affordable broadband connectivity to rural and township communities in South Africa. Other technologies that were on display included additive manufacturing and atomiser, microfluidics and lab-on-chip (LOC) devices and prototypes, indigenous knowledge with scientific research to support the sustainable use and value addition of medicinal plants and 5G network that supports network slicing. Glass cracking in PV modules is a growing challenge facing the solar sector. In collaboration with PV Insight, Nelson Mandela University and Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg (HI ERN), #TeamCSIR held a two-day workshop from 1-2 July 2026 that explored research showing that combined thermal and mechanical stresses, together with factors such as mounting design, thermal cycling, wind loading, and junction box overheating, can lead to crack formation and propagation. Researchers, industry experts, and institutions were in attendance to examine the root causes of rear glass cracking, taking into consideration inspection techniques for PV plants, examining crack classification and analysis methods, reviewing installation and mounting practices, evaluating environmental and operational impacts and identifying solutions to enhance long-term PV module durability. Recently, #TeamCSIR participated in the Southern African Sustainable Energy conference #SASEC2026, held from 24 to 26 June 2026 at Kruger National Park. Through these engagements, the team showcased its suite of research, development and innovation expertise supporting evidence-based planning and contributing to advancing South Africa's #renewableenergy sector. The team contributed to the conference by presenting across various track sessions, as well as delivering a paper titled "Advancing wind resource measurement & assessment capabilities for South Africa's renewable energy sector." Being present in spaces like SASEC matters because it allows the CSIR to share its work, learn from others, and help shape the partnerships and ideas needed for a more secure and sustainable energy future.
