I’m just starting to read Lee Kuan Yew’s book “From third world to first” and I can’t help but see how two leaders both at the independence of their countries almost at the same time in the 60s made decisions that would have monumental implications on their respective nations. All through Lee Kuan Yew is talking about “our people” boosting morale of his people, education for his people, defence of his people. But Kenyatta on the other hand when the issue of land compensation to those who were landless was brought up by Kaggia he was asked what he has done for himself and why he is still poor. Lee Kuan Yew was an ally of Britain but he didn’t use it as cover to enrich himself, he used it to the benefit of his people.

PASTEF–Les Patriotes, the ruling political movement that swept #Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye #Faye to power in 2024, has unanimously reelected Ousmane #Sonko as its president during an ongoing party Congress in Dakar. The party describes the vote as a renewal of its “unshakable confidence” in the former Prime Minister, now president of Senegal’s National Assembly. The party has also announced that about 60 political parties and citizen movements have joined its ranks under a newly signed merger charter. The Congress comes amid growing questions about President Faye’s future within the party, even though he continues to govern independently. The two leaders fell out over Senegal’s public debt crisis and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, a dispute that led President Faye to dismiss Sonko as prime minister and dissolve the previous government. This historic fracture leaves Senegal in a state of political gridlock, where the country's dominant party, PASTEF, controls the legislature but is completely separated from the newly formed government.

@KennedyWandera_ Unless there are strategic considerations not yet visible, I cannot see the logic of this decision. Most likely, President Faye has chosen a path of uncertainty and a prolonged political contest.

@KennedyWandera_ PASTEF controlling 130 of 165 seats means substantial agenda-setting and veto power. Even if constitutional mechanisms allow President Faye to govern by decree temporarily and eventually dissolve parliament, he still faces a period of governing constraints.

One reason many Kenyans view the Ebola quarantine facility for U.S. citizens with skepticism is the memory of COVID-19. Curfews, lockdowns, and other restrictions imposed real economic costs, while vaccine access remained highly unequal globally.

Finally: 1) On bilateral agreements, all parties enter to serve their own interests; there is no altruism. 2) With pandemics & security arrangements, always follow the money: who are the supply-chain beneficiaries & rent-seekers? 3) Capitalism creates a market where none existed

Was this about Kenya’s own biological threats, or absorbing exported ones? The 2015 process may have been legally procedural through executive & legislative ratification, but without public consent, exactly one of the gaps Foreign Affairs Mashinani was recently launched to close.

The goal should be to contain Ebola within the region under the East African Community Secretariat. Right now, Kenya is simply simulating regional health leadership by hosting this facility, while the DRC continues pandemic-king.

The biggest problem with the Kenya-US Ebola facility arrangement is that it is not prioritizing strengthening the health systems that would contain Ebola at its source in DRC. The facility is not for Kenyans or Africans.

Since Kenya has taken this bilateral approach to this epidemic, will it also have separate arrangements for China, the EU, the UK, Russia, Australia, and other African countries?
