@FondOfBeetles @frankie2001mia @British_Airways Yes, a very thoughtful response on your part. Expressed much of how I would have felt... A very difficult situation for the airline and their staff to handle. One of those ' very difficult to see how an accommodation or compromise could be made' situations.
English

This is actually a situation that sounds manageable on paper but awful when it rolls out.
I’m well aware of Tourette’s and what it means.
Helping passengers to understand, perhaps in advance, would be useful. Reassurance that all bags and people have been carefully screened. Maybe over egg this a bit, because all bags and people on all flights should always be carefully screened, of course.
So it’s not the bomb threat.
I don’t know how I - a flyer who constantly manages anxiety, usually successfully and with little outward appearance of nervousness - would respond if he tics “the wing’s on fire”, “we are going to crash” or whatever.
I can’t control my adrenalised response to that kind of stuff. Even someone pointing out of the window raises my alertness. And I reckon many more people are actually afraid of flying than would admit. I don’t know how an in-air, multiple passenger, fight-or-flight (no pun intended) response might play out.
And people will get angry. Human behaviour doesn’t work neatly to information and doctor’s letters?
It’s really difficult. Perhaps with advance notice that I might experience anxious disruptions, I’d actually try a proper pharma solution rather than a few G&Ts.
But then they are telling me about someone’s disability, and it primes people to be nervous. That’s not a neutral setup.
I don’t know what the solution is here? Free G&Ts, I’d hope, and a good holiday for all.

This you @British_Airways
"We are not refusing him because he's got a disability.
"We are refusing him because there's been a threat made that he has a bomb in his bag."
HE HAD HIS DIAGNOSIS LETTER FOR TOURETTES WITH HIM.
They split up his family and they had to pay £2.5k

@michaelpforan I went through that type of tutorial system ( York, 1980s.)Usually 2 students in a weekly tutorial. If there was an odd number involved, volunteers for 1:1 were sought...(I volunteered as a way of making myself do the required work ha ha.) Assumed it had long gone everywhere.
English

I will usually teach 1:1 or 1:2. Occasionally I have groups of 1:3. Students will typically have written a 1.5-2k word essay in advance of the tutorial and students will have 1-2 tutorials a week. We then meet to discuss the topic and their essays.
It’s incredibly rewarding.
Baryon Posadas@baryontensor
I'm reading about the history of the Oxbridge tutorial system and apparently they're meant to be as small as 1-3 students per tutor? I'm currently running something ostensibly called "tutorials" with 50 students per section.

Yup, the Plaza Prizes completely imploded. Pretty disgraceful that even the judges didn't get paid for their work. theguardian.com/culture/2026/a…

@paullewismoney Spot on.The article highlights that the properties in this article are priced much higher than others in the area. So they won't sell. People need to be realistic. Also it's a very different property market to the UK. If you buy wisely, it might hold its value.Don't expect more.
English

Of course it’s not unsellable, just bring the price down! bit.ly/4aZEEMM it’s only worth what a willing buyer will pay on the day you want to sell it,

@wmarybeard @PaulKetchley49 It can't be a real University PI because the labour market is outside University control. The University can't provide the jobs. It can only deliver the education. So to some extent prospective students may be misled. For many a University degree may really not be worth the cost
Benijófar, España 🇪🇸 English

@wmarybeard @PaulKetchley49 Part of the problem is that many universities themselves foolishly bought into that story (graduate salaries being a PI for an individual university) and actively promulgated it, overemphasising the graduate premium as a measurement of their own value, when it really isn't.

Am a proud sister of @grainnekelly9 who got some well-deserved recognition last night. Over 30 years in the security industry, starting way back when women in Security were "as rare as hens' teeth". From her UK colleagues. @SecuritasUK @MickeyKelly10

Let’s hear it for the Information Commissioner, who appears to be almost the only person in Scottish public life who cares about doing their job properly.
