The FCC has officially approved Reflect Orbital’s first test satellite, moving its “sunlight on demand” idea one step closer to reality. The startup wants to launch a satellite with a huge mirror that can reflect sunlight back to Earth after sunset, they want to light up places like solar farms, construction sites, disaster zones, and search-and-rescue operations without traditional lighting. This first launch is a test to see if the technology works, if successful, the company plans to build a much larger network of mirror satellites.

The U.S. government has approved the launch of giant space mirrors that can beam concentrated sunlight directly to Earth's surface. Soon, rich people may be able to pay to have sunlight any time they want.
