@vaalkaar @wil_da_beast630 Yeah. Even if the person receiving deserves it, with t you start twisting the mind of the giver. Either they wind up depressed and guilty ridden with PTSD, or they develop a taste for it and need to pursue it on their own. Both outcomes seem pretty bad.

I don't think it's horrifying, but from a virtue ethics perspective, such as what Aristotle or CS Lewis wrote about, torturing does more harm to those administering it and the execution of the condemned should be quick, cold, and clinical. Think removing cancer cells from society and refusing to give in to the enjoyment of inflicting unnecessary suffering.

I do not think killing, or even torturing, (say) serial killers is horrifying at all.
The large majority of people, when asked well-framed honest questions, just reallllly do not care much about this.
If the pain of a serial killer affects you at all, you are not only evil, but also weak prey.*

Neither of my parents went to Church but they were always happy to make me go whenever someone else's decided to drag me along. I didn't become religious until my forties. To this day the only church I enjoy is in jail. When the filter comes off and it gets real because there's no women or children to pretend in front of.
