International Law Expert: "It's Time to Close All UN Offices in Israel" Lt. Col. (res.) The Arab world is a failure on the world humanitarian stage. We do not see comparable outrage or sustained support for Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, or the Congo, only for the so-called Palestinians. This raises the question of why support is so selectively directed, and why some people align themselves with what others describe as a genocidal ideology. A better question is why we actually see people who support it to a certain extent, keeping Israel partially outside this assessment. The answer, in this view, is presented as simple: support is rooted in Arab Sunni identity and solidarity. It is based on the principle of “support your brother, whether he is oppressor or oppressed” (ناصر أخاك المسلم ظالماً أو مظلوماً). From this perspective, the issue is not driven primarily by universal humanitarian concern, but by in-group religious and cultural identification. It is further argued that the Palestinian cause has been more widely propagated within Sunni Islamic discourse, while sectarian divisions, including Shia Islam’s differing historical and political positioning, influence the degree and form of engagement. In this framing, if alignment between these sectarian and political spheres were to shift, opposition voices would diminish accordingly.
