7/8 To improve the monitoring of zooplankton populations (and our understanding of the impacts of climate change), we could combine traditional techniques (like nets, plankton recorders) with newer methods such as molecular data, advanced sensors, robotic imagers and satellites.

6/8 The review identifies 168 long-term zooplankton monitoring programs, with large gaps in coastal Asia, South America and much of Africa, and 'severely lacking’ in offshore open-ocean locations. Of all these monitoring programs, only 19% have their data freely available.

5/8 In the biological carbon pump, zooplankton: 🦠 graze on phytoplankton near the surface 🔽 shift carbon into the deep ocean ♻️recycle essential resources eg. iron, nitrogen 💩 excrete nutrients that ‘fertilise’ phytoplankton But how ocean warming will change this is unclear.

4/8 Marine zooplankton are important eco-influencers because they: 💥 transfer energy from primary production into the food chain 🐋 feed larger marine animals 🔄 drive global biogeochemical cycles 🎣 provide us with ecosystem services like fishery production and carbon storage.

2/8 Fun fact: marine copepods are the most abundant multicellular aquatic animal on Earth and collectively may outnumber all other animals in the world. 📸 Julian Uribe-Palomino @IMOS_AUS-@CSIRO
