MEV = Maximal Extractable Value
(crypto's "invisible tax" or hidden edge where block builders skim extra profit)
Validators/miners control:
- which txs go in the block
- which get dropped
- the exact order of execution
This lets them extract value beyond normal fees/rewards.
Classic plays:
- Sandwich attacks → spot a big DEX swap → buy first (pump price), victim trades at worse rate, sell after → profit
- Arbitrage → snatch cross-DEX price diffs
- Liquidations → front-run to claim first
Some MEV keeps markets efficient, but much is predatory → worse slippage/prices for regular users.
Solutions: private mempools, Flashbots, MEV-Boost, encrypted txs, etc.
Bonus: Chains like $Qubic sidestep traditional MEV entirely. Its quorum-based consensus + Useful Proof of Work architecture doesn't rely on single block proposers who can reorder txs for profit → no classic MEV extraction possible.
TL;DR: On most blockchains (Ethereum etc.), block builders aren't neutral; they rearrange your trades to pocket extra gains. That's MEV.
