We, my team and I, have decided not to contest the Bihar elections 2025. The main reason for this decision is that my bail was rejected by the Delhi High Court (2 Sep, 2025), and even though we moved to Supreme Court immediately (9 Sep, 2025), we failed to get interim relief. The matter has been postponed to late October. We expected that I will be out on bail by the time of election. We are not traditional politicians, we are carriers of a new democratic message about structural changes necessary for the marginalised sections, something that is all but absent from the mainstream political discourse, even among those who claim to speak for marginalised sections. As one of the handful of representatives of this new emerging class of political actors, it is my duty to reach the masses and articulate our democratic message in simplest possible terms. However, the state has put hurdles on our path, and I’ll be unable to personally campaign, and mingle freely with my constituency. We did anticipate this scenario and tried to prepare for it, but with extreme restrictions which a political prisoner like me faces, specially in communicating with the outside world, one month was simply not enough we needed more time. Our primary responsibility is spreading our message about structural change i.e, decentralisation, proportional representation as a method of election, reservation of minorities across caste groups, religious autonomy, etc. We’ll keep working towards that end, we have to force those who seek our votes to address these fundamental issues. I am thankful to our team who worked tirelessly over the last two-three months, I am also thankful to the thousands of people in Bahadurganj who engaged with us, worked with us, expressed support and sympathy. I’ll be among them as soon as I am released. I am also thankful to the lakhs of people across India who sent us messages of support, solidarity and love. I find that our message about structural change has risen in across India and across community. We consider this an achievement, our efforts have not been in vain. We have learned many lessons in last two-three months, which will be useful for our future course of action and upcoming elections. Sharjeel Imam

Listen to @AfreenFatima136 speaking in JNU in solidarity with the political prisoners falsely accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. She read out a moving post by Muzzammil Imam, brother of Sharjeel Imam, reflecting on his brother’s long years of incarceration and the quiet, aching wait of their mother. In her words and presence was a reminder that behind every name turned into a case number by the state lies a family enduring grief, resilience, and the slow violence of separation. This gathering at JNU was not just about one prisoner or one family, but about standing together against a system that criminalizes dissent and seeks to silence Muslim voices demanding justice. youtu.be/UIbUmogF0nU?si…

#SharjeelImam

Salam! A friend visiting me in jail told me about the protests against the AMU fee hike and the shameful use of force by the AMU proctorial team alongside the UP Police on peacefully protesting students. Calling the police on one’s own students is an act of deliberate complicity. The fee hike is part of a long-standing alignment between sections of the administration and the political establishment to make AMU inaccessible and politically docile. AMU is being stripped of its public character and turned into an institution that serves only the elite, they are exceptionalizing and privatizing public education. During the anti-CAA protests, AMU students were at the forefront, organizing with courage, articulating with clarity, and, on 15 December 2019, facing brutal state violence. I went to speak at AMU several times, and each visit sparked a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives. After my arrest, AMU students were the first to protest in my support. The university has long been a courageous voice of Muslims of India, and the state has never been comfortable with that. Whether through suspending union elections, arbitrary disciplinary action, or financial barriers like this fee hike, the attempt is the same, it is to weaken student politics, exclude the poor, and silence the free and courageous voice of this campus. When the administration of a minority institution collaborates in this project, it is not only a betrayal of its own students but also of its historical role in the community’s survival and advancement. I stand in unwavering solidarity with AMU students. Their fight is not theirs alone. Defending public education and dissenting spaces is a shared struggle for all of us. — Sharjeel Imam

It was around 7 pm when I started leaving the #JNU protest outside Safdarjung's Tomb. I had been walking for maybe ten minutes or so and had reached the Jor Bagh metro station when suddenly the street lights went off on Aurobindo Road - a major city thoroughfare. (1)
