While many countries in Europe were still struggling to set up national TV, and countries like South Africa didn't even have TV until 1976, Nigeria was already "On Air." The Visionary: Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Premier of the Western Region, wanted a way to educate and inform the people. He didn't wait for the British; he went ahead and launched WNTV (Western Nigeria Television) in Ibadan. The Historical Milestone: 1. "First in Africa": That was their famous slogan. Ibadan became the media capital of the black world. 2. Education over Entertainment: It wasn't just for music and movies; WNTV was built to broadcast educational programs to schools across the region. 3. The Infrastructure: They built a massive transmitter on Mapo Hill that could reach as far as Lagos. In 1959, Nigeria was setting the pace for the entire continent. From the first TV station to the first stadium (Liberty Stadium), we were the "Tech Giants" before the word was even invented. As we look at our media space today in 2026, with all our streaming apps and digital stations, let’s not forget the "Ibadan Pioneers" who showed us that Nigeria can always be #1.
