A profile of Illia Polosukhin (@ilblackdragon), co-founder of NEAR Protocol. Before crypto, Illia helped build the architecture that modern AI runs on. In 2017, he co-authored “Attention Is All You Need” at Google; the research paper that introduced Transformers and quietly became the foundation for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and nearly every major AI breakthrough that followed. Most people in crypto know him as the founder of NEAR. Most people in AI already used something he helped invent. But Illia became increasingly concerned about where the industry was heading. The more powerful AI became, the more centralized it also became. Models, data, compute, identity, distribution; everything was consolidating into a handful of companies. So he left. Not because AI was failing. Because he believed ownership was. That conviction slowly reshaped NEAR itself. What started as a Layer 1 blockchain evolved into something much broader: infrastructure for user-owned AI. Illia’s thesis is deceptively simple: If AI becomes the dominant interface for the internet, then users need ownership over the agents acting on their behalf. Otherwise, the future internet becomes a closed system controlled by whoever owns the models. Crypto changes that equation. Wallets become identity. Chains become memory. Smart contracts become coordination layers for autonomous systems. And AI agents stop being products. They become economic participants. That’s why NEAR has spent the last year aggressively positioning around AI agents, chain abstraction, and user owned coordination. Not as a trend. As infrastructure. Illia believes the next phase of the internet will be driven by millions of autonomous agents interacting across open systems; transacting, coordinating, negotiating, and creating value on behalf of users. But open agent economies need something centralized systems can’t provide: Neutral rails. Verifiable execution. Permissionless coordination. Shared ownership. Persistent reputation. That’s where crypto matters. And it’s exactly why conversations around AI × Web3 suddenly feel much bigger than chatbots or copilots. @Mantle_Official is testing that reality directly through the Turing Test Hackathon. Agents are competing against humans in real trading conditions, making decisions under pressure with every action permanently recorded onchain through Mantle L2. Can they survive consequences? Illia’s vision revolves around user-owned AI systems operating across open networks. Mantle’s Turing Test Hackathon is stress-testing what those systems actually look like when exposed to markets, incentives, and adversarial conditions. Different builders. Same emerging reality: AI agents are moving from assistants into economic actors. Illia once described the future of AI as one where users don’t simply consume intelligence from platforms, but directly own and control the agents representing them online. That idea sounded abstract a few years ago. Now entire ecosystems are quietly being built around it. The infrastructure race is already happening. Some people are still building tools.
