A friend just called to share his ordeal and told me I could put it out because he’s still trying to understand how everything flipped so fast without him seeing it coming. Funny enough, they met on Twitter, so there’s a high chance she might even see this. He started talking to this girl not too long ago, and from the beginning it didn’t feel like one of those random situations. She was intentional, soft-spoken, very present, the kind of person that makes you feel seen without doing too much. It didn’t take long before they became exclusive, not even by force, just naturally, like both of them were on the same page. What made it easier for him to trust her was how open she seemed. She would tell him where she was, who she was with, always checking in, always present. It got to a point where he stopped questioning anything because, in his mind, there was nothing to question. There were small signs sometimes, moments where she would go quiet or avoid certain conversations about the future, but nothing strong enough to make him doubt her, and he didn’t want to be that person looking for problems where everything felt peaceful. Everything was normal—until today. He woke up this morning to multiple missed calls and messages from different people asking him the same thing: “Guy, your babe dey get married?” At first he thought it was a joke, until someone sent him the wedding flier. Her name. Her picture. Another man. Wedding date… just a few days away. He said his body went completely cold. Not even anger at first, just confusion, because last night they had spoken like everything was normal—no hint, no distance, nothing that suggested anything like that was coming. He called her immediately. At first, she didn’t pick, then she finally did. And instead of denying it, she admitted it calmly. She told him it was an arranged marriage, that her father had already decided everything, that she didn’t have a choice, that it was something she had been dealing with quietly. He asked her one simple question: “Since when?” And the answer was what broke him. It wasn’t recent. It had been planned for a while—while she was talking to him, while she was showing up, while she was letting him believe everything was real. He kept asking why she didn’t say anything, and she said she didn’t want to lose him, that she wanted to “enjoy what they had” while it lasted. That was the part that didn’t sit right, because to her it was something temporary, but to him it was something he was building. He said what messed with him the most wasn’t even the wedding—it was how normal everything had been. How she could talk to him, laugh with him, plan with him, knowing fully well there was an end she never mentioned. He didn’t shout, didn’t insult her. He just ended the call. Later today, he said something that hasn’t left my head: “It’s not even that she’s getting married… it’s that I was living in something that already had an expiry date I didn’t know about.” And honestly, that’s what makes it heavy, because sometimes it’s not about being lied to directly… it’s about being involved in a story where the ending was already decided without you.
