(Thread) In the first What If? book, I answered a question about cooking a steak by dropping it from space. At one point, I commented—jokingly!—that if anyone put a steak in a hypersonic wind tunnel to gather better data, I’d love to see the video. Well, I have good news.

Seeking plantar fasciitis (heel pain) advice. Have a night splint and some compressions socks (even specific to plantar fasciitis!) but it’s… not great. Exercises that folk have tried which work?

R v Sally Clark (1999) shows how appalling miscarriages of justice occur when an expert witness makes serious statistical errors. Dr Roy Meadow calculated the odds of 2 infant SIDs deaths occurring in the same family as 1:73000000. Clark was wrongly convicted of murdering.. 1/5

@mathillustrated Sort of cheating. I have a bunch of spider plants which came from dividing a plant I brought home as a baby plant in a styrofoam cup in kindergarten. Momma plant is still kicking it at my mom’s house. I’ll leave the age calculation to the reader. :P

@alittlestats Twitter has always been bad for conversations. A low # characters/tweet limit, and doesn't clearly show who is replying to whom. Facebook is better for sustained conversations. Is that possible on Discord or Mastodon? Do they let us see who is replying to whom?

What I will mourn the most from Twitter is how I was able to, over time, create a diverse but curated timeline filled with a combo of math, statistics, teaching, dataviz, math art, NYC news, social justice, and related posts. It’s going to be hard to recreate somewhere else.

Twitter right now is like most schools. Absolutely tone deaf management but somehow the talents of the limited number of staff doing an amazing job keeping everything functioning anyway.

Weekend project = Mastodon sign up, I guess. Am I the last to migrate over? Where are all the math and stats Twitter people landing? Any recommendations for being able to preserve as many follows and followers as possible?
