"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress." Captain Eric Moody’s voice was calm, but the circumstances…they were frightening. On the night of June 24, 1982, British Airways Flight 9 was cruising at 37,000 feet above the Indian Ocean. The mood on board was calm; the passengers were settling in for the night, and the crew, led by Captain Eric Moody, watched the instruments. Then, the impossible began with a light show. An eerie, electric blue glow began to dance across the cockpit windshields—a phenomenon known as St. Elmo’s fire. While beautiful, it was the harbinger of a nightmare. In the cabin, a thick, acrid smoke smelling of sulfur began to fill the air. Initially, the crew suspected cigarette smoke—this was 1982, after all—but the intensity was wrong. The radar showed clear skies, yet the plane was being battered by invisible particles. Then, the unthinkable happened. Engine four surged and flamed out. Less than ninety seconds later, engines two, one, and three followed suit. The roar of the 747 was replaced by a terrifying, absolute silence. They were seven miles high, carrying 263 souls, with zero power. The massive Boeing had become a 300-ton glider falling toward the jagged mountains of Java. The British Understatement In the cockpit, the situation was frantic but controlled. The co-pilot’s oxygen mask collapsed, forcing an emergency dive to breathable air. They were losing altitude fast—gliding with a ratio of 15:1—meaning for every mile they dropped, they traveled fifteen forward. But the mountains were rising to meet them. Amidst this chaos, Captain Moody keyed the intercom to address the terrified passengers. His voice, steady and devoid of panic, delivered one of the most famous lines in aviation history: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress." The Invisible Enemy The crew didn't know it, but they had flown directly into a massive plume of volcanic ash from Mount Galunggung. Because the ash was dry, it didn't appear on the weather radar, which is designed to detect moisture. Inside the engines, a catastrophic physical reaction was taking place. The microscopic shards of volcanic glass were sucked into the combustion chambers, where temperatures exceeded the melting point of the rock. The ash melted into a sticky glaze, coating the interior turbines and choking the airflow, suffocating the engines. The Miracle of Physics As the plane plummeted through 13,000 feet, the air outside grew denser and cooler. This temperature drop caused the molten glass coating the engines to brittle and snap off. The crew had attempted to restart the engines over a dozen times with no success. But on the next attempt, the cleared turbines roared back to life. First engine four, then the others followed. They had power, but the danger wasn't over. The Blind Landing As they approached Jakarta for an emergency landing, Captain Moody realized the "sandblasting" effect of the ash had turned the windshields completely opaque. They were flying blind. Relying entirely on instruments and a tiny strip of visibility at the very edge of the side window, the crew threaded the needle. They touched down safely at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. Not a single life was lost. The incident revolutionized aviation safety, launching the International Airways Volcano Watch. It proved that even when the impossible happens—when the sky goes dark and the engines go silent—panic is the enemy, and persistence is the only way home.

No sean tan inocentes. A los que hacen cosas malas no siempre les va mal. A muchos les va a ir bien. Los vas a ver triunfar. Los vas a ver quedarse con la mejor parte de todo. Y ese es el mundo real. Pero si esto les sirve de consuelo, puedo decirles que he visto muchos malvados exitosos... pero nunca en paz."

🚨BREAKING: Qatar just declared force majeure on LNG contracts to Italy, Belgium, South Korea, and China. For up to 5 years. Here's what the CEO just told In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Qatar's Energy Minister and CEO of QatarEnergy just confirmed the damage from Iran's attack on Ras Laffan. It's worse than anyone thought. → 2 out of 14 LNG trains damaged → 1 of 2 gas-to-liquids (GTL) facilities damaged → 12.8 million tonnes per year of LNG offline for 3-5 years → 17% of Qatar's total LNG export capacity gone → $20 billion annual revenue loss → $26 billion in damaged facilities (the CEO said they "should not be attacked") QatarEnergy may declare force majeure on long term LNG supply contracts to: → Italy → Belgium → South Korea → China For up to 5 years. Additional exports declining: → Condensates: Down 24% → LPG: Down 13% → Naphtha: Down 6% → Sulphur: Down 6% → Helium: Down 14% The damaged trains: → Train S4 and S6: 30% owned by ExxonMobil, rest by QatarEnergy Production cannot restart until hostilities cease. What this means? 12.8 million tonnes per year = 17% of Qatar's LNG capacity. 17% of its capacity just disappeared for 3-5 years. Italy, Belgium, South Korea, China: These countries had long-term contracts with Qatar. Force majeure means those contracts are suspended. They now have to compete in spot markets for replacement cargoes. Against each other. And against every other buyer scrambling for LNG. $20 billion per year in lost revenue for Qatar. $26 billion in facilities damaged. The only country with capacity to absorb Qatari volumes at scale is the United States. I wrote a full breakdown on how this shift benefits US LNG producers and which stocks are positioned to win from Qatar's structural supply loss👇 open.substack.com/pub/themerchan… #Iran #Qatar #LNG

THE ISLANDER
THE ISLANDER@IslanderWORLD·
🇦🇪 UAE is already facing a collapse in real estate values. But some much needed sanity from Al Habtoor Group's Khalifa Al Habtoor’s open letter addressing Lindsey Graham’s call for Gulf States to join the war. "I heard the statements of U.S. Senator Graham, in which he calls on the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to enter this war, saying that we are also under attack and that we must join the fight. And I say to him clearly: We know full well why we are under attack, and we also know who dragged the entire region into this dangerous escalation without consulting those he calls his "allies" in the region. We thank God that the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries are doing well, and we have no need for someone who claims he came to the Middle East to save us. The truth is that hasty American decisions are what embroiled the region in a war whose peoples were not party to its decision-making, and its local allies were not consulted before it was launched. We do not deny the Iranian threat to the region, which has become clear in recent days. We do not trust Iran. But this is a dirty game in which several powers clash at the expense of our region, with no honor in it and no transparency. In this scene, Iran, Israel, and the United States all move according to their own interests, not according to the interests of the peoples of the Middle Eastern Arab countries. And for this reason, we say it clearly: We will not enter this war to serve the interests of others, nor will we sacrifice our sons in a conflict that could have been avoided through diplomacy and political solutions. We value the lives of our sons, and we do not treat their souls as "collateral damage" as some do. Nothing in this world is more precious than the lives of our sons, and no alliance with any country in the world is worth risking these lives. If President Donald Trump and Senator Graham are prepared to risk their country and the lives of Americans for Israel's interests, that is their choice. As for us, we will not do the same. Senator Graham says they are "the Arabs' allies" and that we need and benefit from U.S. protection. And I say to him: We do not need your protection. All we want from you is to keep your hands off us. He also says: "We sell you weapons." As if that were a service the United States provides us. The truth is that this is no favor from anyone. We invest in our security and pay billions of dollars for these weapons, and it is a massive trade and industry built on these deals. In fact, the United States itself is now turning to buy weapons from Ukraine to supply its allies in other wars. This is an industry that thrives on wars and arms sales, not a charitable endeavor. And the clearest thing of all is what Graham himself said when he spoke about oil. He stated that Iran and Venezuela together hold 31% of global oil reserves, and that the United States could establish a partnership with this share of the world's oil, and that it would be a "nightmare for China"—he even added that if the regime in Iran changes, there would be a "new Middle East," and the United States would "make a lot of money." Only then does the picture become clear. And only then do we understand why they want this war. Finally, I say to Senator Graham: You may be a senator in the U.S. Senate, but anyone who hears your statements might think you're a member of the Israeli Knesset, because you defend Israel's interests more than you defend the interests of the American people themselves. The peoples of our region have the right to live in security and stability, far from others' wars. We also have the right to decide how to protect our interests and security, and to emerge from crises we did not create but which were imposed on us as a result of conflicts between powers vying for influence in this region. We want peace, stability. We will not accept being forced down the path of war, nor will we accept being fuel for others' battles."
