"I've been trying to gain Koine Greek fluency for 20+ years and have made more progress towards that goal in two weeks with your app than I have made in that entire 20+ year period through countless books and courses." - Bob Edwards #biblingostories

"Heart" is an often misunderstood metaphor in the Bible. Take the Shema: "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." DEUTERONOMY 6:5 (ESV) This verse is familiar, but you might be slightly surprised by the nuances of its original meaning. The word “heart” לֵבָב (lev) does literally refer to the blood-pumping organ. It’s a metaphor in Hebrew just like it is in English. But in Hebrew, it has a different meaning. Knowing something with your “heart” in English is different than knowing something with your לֵבָב in Hebrew. In English, we use “heart” as a metaphor for the “seat of our emotions.” But this isn’t exactly what it means in Hebrew. For example, a very common phrase in the Bible is “he said in his heart.” This is the normal way to say “he thought” in Hebrew. To take another example, Deuteronomy 29:3 says that God has “not given to all of you a heart to know.” In Hebrew culture, you thought with your “heart” - similarly to the way we use the word “mind” in English. In English, to know something with your heart is often to know something by intuition, not facts. But in Hebrew, to know something with your לֵבָב is to know according to facts. So in Deuteronomy 6:5 (the Shema), God is calling his people to love him with all their mental faculties, not just with their feelings or intuitions. Emotions still matter, but they aren’t the emphasis here. This verse is a call for God’s people to constantly remember God with their minds. To teach their children, talk throughout their day, and paste reminders everywhere that loving Yahweh is the primary directive of life. Enjoy insights from the Hebrew and Greek text of Scripture? Check out Biblingo to learn the languages for yourself! It only takes 15 minutes a day. biblingo.com

Great question! If you're able to read aloud at a rate faster than natural speaking speed with comprehension, you should consider shifting your focus to silent reading. Oral reading (or reading aloud) is great for earlier stages of learning, especially when you're still learning and mastering pronunciation. But silent reading is the "gold standard" - you can read with greater speed, comprehension, and stamina when reading silently.

Speed. You have a need for it. Developing fluency is all about going fast. You want to get to the point where you are able to use the language automatically (without thinking about it). When doing a fluency exercise, you should go as fast as possible while still focusing on the meaning of the language. That way, you can push yourself to comprehend the material quicker and quicker on each run-through until your brain is able to use the language quickly and automatically. With Biblingo’s new fluency exercises, you can time yourself and measure your reading speed. This turns fluency into a game where you play to beat your previous best score. You’ll be fluently reading the Bible in Greek and Hebrew before you know it. app.biblingo.org

To learn a language, you should spend a lot more time practicing with material that you’ve already learned than you spend learning new material. When practicing, take your time and focus on getting everything correct. Don’t try to go fast. Focus on accuracy. With Biblingo’s new proficiency-based learning system, you don't have to wonder whether you are practicing enough to get good at using the language. The app maps out exactly where you should be spending your learning time to make efficient progress. So jump in and get practicing! app.biblingo.org

Unfortunately, learners are typically not very good at determining the right pace. This is well documented in SLA research, and exactly why things like spaced repetition systems exist and are so effective. Additionally, we've heard many anecdotal experiences both from our users and learners using other systems/tools/materials who consistently say they don't know how fast to progress. At the end of the day, the best metric for the right pace is mastery - i.e. fluency. If you aren't achieving mastery of the material you're learning, you're moving too fast. If you are, you *may* be able to move faster. It's about finding the threshold. Yes, what causes this threshold is individual, multi-factorial, and varies day-to-day. But mastery of material, or lack thereof, will always be the best way to locate that threshold.

“You never have to wonder whether you are hitting the right pace in your learning.” It’s part of a teacher’s job to help the student find their right pace. In that sense the aim for your app is a good one. And I get that this quote is marketing language. But it’s not an ideal philosophy for learning. At the end of the day, only the student knows the right pace for them. For example, should they spend 10 minutes a day, 100 minutes, or 10 hours with your app or with a textbook, or in the scripture itself? Everyone’s capacity is intrinsically different, and it even varies day-by-day for the same person, based on many factors.

Learning a language is like building a brick wall. Each time you learn a new thing, you are laying another brick. But you can only stack so many bricks before the ones below need time to set. Add too many at once, and the structure doesn't hold. Language learning is similar. Your brain has a limited capacity for novelty. Cram it with too much new material, and you won't be able to understand or retain what you are learning. Instead, you should introduce a little new language knowledge every day, then spend most of your time using what you already know. As that knowledge solidifies into mastery, your capacity for more learning grows, and you can lay more bricks. With Biblingo’s new mastery-based learning system, you never have to wonder whether you are hitting the right pace in your learning. The app maps out exactly where you should be spending your learning time to make the fastest progress. So jump into Biblingo and trust the process. You'll be reading fluently before you know it. app.biblingo.org

I’ve recommended Biblingo for years. As summer approaches, I cannot think of a better way to practice Greek or Hebrew than using Biblingo a little every day. Avoid the dreaded "summer slide." For more of my thoughts, see youtu.be/3VAWEpNNqro?si….

A message from CEO Kevin about Biblingo's new update: A new and improved Biblingo just arrived, and I'm stoked. Let me tell you a little about why I'm so excited for this update to finally be in your hands: I've met lot of people who've invested a lot of hard work into learning Greek and Hebrew but have struggled to learn to read despite their best efforts. Here's the snag: Learning is 25% perspiration and 75% strategy. It's not enough to put in the work. You have to learn how to learn first. And that is what the new features of Biblingo are designed to do. They teach you how to learn. In this new version, we've revamped our learning system so that you can learn more efficiently. There are basically three things you need to do to learn a language (and just about anything else too): Step 1 - Learn (you have to take in new information) Step 2 - Retain (practice, practice, practice) Step 3 - Fluency (focus on using the language fast through timed practice) Biblingo's new system unites learn, retain, and fluency exercises in a proficiency-based system so you can see what you are good at and what you might be struggling with. With this system, you can be confident you are investing your hard work exactly where you should be. This system takes the guesswork out of learning Greek and Hebrew. As long as you are balancing your time in Biblingo between learn, review, and fluency activities, you can relax and trust the process. Biblingo makes sure you are making efficient progress towards reading the Bible in the original languages. Here's a rundown of what we've packed into this Biblingo update: 🚀 Brand new dashboard with lots of shiny toys and actionable metrics 📈 WPM: Ability to track your reading speed (this is huge) 💯 Three flavors of XP: Learn (new material), Retain (old material), and Fluency (timed practice). 🥅 Goal setting: set your weekly XP goal and play against yourself 🎉 And more! We hope you enjoy all the new features on your path to becoming a more efficient reader of the biblical languages. If you have thoughts on the new update, comment underneath this post. We’d love to hear your feedback. Onward! Kevin
