@binarybits @chi_t_williams The more integer multiples (half wavelengths) you can line up, the larger the antenna gain, for a given number of antenna elements.

If you read last week's OpenAI post about their (quite impressive) math breakthrough, you probably got to this diagram and had no idea what you were looking at. I know I didn't. Now you can read @chi_t_williams's article explaining it and the rest of the result.

@warrn_peace @chi_t_williams Interesting, is integer-length diagonals a factor there?
English

@binarybits @chi_t_williams As signal processing was my first professional love, I’m tickled by the solution’s connection to antenna theory

@GaryMarcus @NathanpmYoung Yeah, I'll be surprised if there is a single city where Tesla has 100k paid driverless rides a month by the end of the year.

@NathanpmYoung @binarybits my side of our bet is looking pretty strong if this is typical: apple.news/AP6U00WfpRFCLR…

If this helpful Unit Distance Conjecture post isn't enough for you, here's my amateur followup grilling of Claude: claude.ai/share/9bf59de5…

Other news outlets hand-waved past the substance of OpenAI's big math breakthrough last week. But I realized I had a math major on my team and I could get him to actually explain the result.

This meme (and its many variations) is so helpful for Rubio's public image. Positions him as the only competent administration member and maybe secretly skeptical of Trump shenanigans. And the fact that it's a joke lets him laugh it off when he's in the White House.

The Work From Home revolution is still, years later, severely underrated as an economic shock. From a labor market & a business operations perspective of this era, it should be in the same conversations as AI. I'm glad more research is coming out on WFH. ft.com/content/2205e2…

@AlisonSomin Another possibility is that some patrons want it but enough others would be outraged that it wouldn't work out to the restaurant's benefit overall.
English

Let me be irritatingly Chicago School about this and suggest that if there were a real market for this sort of thing, it would be widespread. That there isn’t suggests not many people actually want it.
Breaking911@Breaking911
A new survey found that 75% of Americans believe restaurants should offer some form of adults-only dining experience, including child-free sections, late-night restrictions for kids, and quieter environments focused more on the dining experience than family-friendly chaos.

@binarybits @chi_t_williams a real public service, thank you both

@chi_t_williams Read a full explanation of the OpenAI result, and its implications for math, in Kai's post. understandingai.org/p/openais-mile…

It's hard to draw this alternative pattern because it only produces more unit-distance pairs when you have many points. But @chi_t_williams generated a similar pattern with hundreds of points here. It's pretty.

English

@chi_t_williams went to a math conference in January, so he was well placed to assess the announcement's larger significance.
