With regards Trumps proposal of the US sending ground forces into Iran… Look at Ukraine in Feb 2022: decimated air force, tiny navy, and an army that was still building up. Yet they’ve punched massively above their weight against a nuclear superpower… largely thanks to cheap, lethal drone technology. Drones are the new weapon of mass destruction. Hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers have been killed, with total casualties now exceeding 1¼ million. Entire stretches of eastern Ukraine and western Russia are littered with the evidence. The entire region is an absolute bone yard from one horizon to another with the remains of Russians, hunted down, pursued and ruthlessly dispatched from this world by tiny cheap but lethal drones . Ukrainian drones have also decimated and mauled and sunk much of the Russian Black Sea Fleet (forcing the remains of it to abandon its Sevastopol naval base in Crimea and cower behind booms, scuttled block ships and submarine nets and Novorossiysk where they still get targeted by Ukrainian drone swarms), hit strategic bombers at distant airfields, refineries, oil facilities, and shadow fleet tankers. Iran is another underdog that has invested heavily in drones and missiles. If Trump escalates against them, threatening strikes or even Marines on the ground… no one should underestimate what an attacked state can do with swarms of cheap drones. As we saw in Ukraine’s astonishing Operation Spiderweb (June 2025) and their long-range strikes on the Russian shadow fleet in the Mediterranean: Distance is no longer protection. Naval bases like Norfolk, Virginia or Pearl Harbour are increasingly vulnerable to drone swarms… no one is talking about this… yet!. Zelenskyy warned Trump and Vance that the oceans won’t always shield America. He was right. Trump and his White House team of mainly unsuitable amateurs seem to think this would be Gulf War 2.0. In reality it would be more like Great Sioux War 2.0 and or Custer’s Last Stand at Little Bighorn v2.0. Landing forces (especially on islands like Kharg) against drone swarms you can’t even see And they are sending FPV drones from 25–75 km out. The enemy won’t even need to show their face. Drones in large numbers are a genuine WMD threat. The air over Ukraine is often thick with them; fibre-optic cables now litter the battlefield. My article from May 2024 (first version Aug 2023) predicted exactly this shift. It’s now playing out and has been for quite some time. Landing US forces in Iran is an extremely bad idea.
