The United States actually relies on very little oil that comes out of the Strait of Hormuz. 20 to 21 million barrels flow through there every single day — that’s about 20% of all the petroleum the entire world consumes. But for the US? It’s surprisingly insignificant. The U.S. only accounts for a tiny 2–2.5% of everything moving through the strait. Put another way: that works out to just 7–8% of our total crude oil imports, and a mere 2% of all the petroleum the USA actually uses (we burn through roughly 20 million barrels per day overall). We barely depend on it anymore. The shale boom completely changed the game — the United States is now a net petroleum exporter, and the vast majority of the crude we still import comes from right next door: about 60% from Canada and 10% from Mexico. Imports from the Persian Gulf have dropped to record lows in recent years. In short, the U.S. is far less tied to Hormuz than people often assume. If only you knew your facts when you post, you too could make a decent counterpoint instead of just throwing out your feelings in a post.
