H'okay, I'm opting to delete this post/thread. The guy did something pretty dumb, but I don't think it's great for all of us to turn this into a massive dunk-fest all on one person. The Twitter algorithm found this post and made things way bigger/meaner than I had expected.

@Plinz @GunnelsWarren Your argument is that if Elon was taxed, the Boards of those companies would not be able to build electric cars or rockets? That’s a Cult of Personality, not a business model. There are thousands of businesses that have become hugely successful with a minority share founder.

If Bernie's 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires had been enacted in 2012, Elon Musk would be worth less than $365 billion instead of the $834 billion that he's worth today. He'd still be the wealthiest man alive & every senior would have dental, vision & hearing under Medicare.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

BREAKING: Today Bernie Sanders is proposing a bill to raise $4.4 trillion in taxes from America’s billionaires — a move that would virtually cut their massive fortunes in half. A chunk of the money would go toward sending a $3K stimulus check to every person earning under $150K.

Chinese engineers literally refactored @OpenClaw in Go for insane efficiency 🤯 It runs on a $10 @Raspberry_Pi instead of a $399 Mac mini. → Uses <10 MB of memory (99% smaller than OpenClaw) → 400× faster startup time → Boots in 1 second Free and open source, repo in 🧵↓

@dogplayer127 @W1ZF0L @Pirat_Nation I’m a game dev so yes I know. Steam can charge what they want, but why aren’t games also sold on platforms with lower cuts priced lower than on Steam? Maybe it has to do with the case in the class action lawsuit against Valve 🤔

@brukername @W1ZF0L @Pirat_Nation Try selling a game you developed on your own. You need a store webpage, a payment processing system (refunds/charge back too), a file hosting for download, marketing, community/forum page, support, etc. That 30% is fair with how much audience Steam have lmao.

Valve refunds money to Ashes of Creation players even if they don't meet the refund requirements. This applies even to players with significantly more hours, following Intrepid Studios' collapse, full team layoffs, and project abandonment.

@W1ZF0L @Pirat_Nation Be kind to gamers, squeeze game devs of 30%, use first mover advantage and network effect to lock in gamers, use shady pricing enforcement for game devs to scare away price competition, become one of the most profitable companies per employee in history

@thethiny @ryiacy @rtwlz What is your setup like? Since you’re running 20 services I mean, how do you organize them? SSH in and run docker containers? Or some orchestration layer?

@ryiacy @rtwlz My contract is 6 euro for 1 TB bandwidth at 1gbps then unlimited for 400mbps. I'm hosting 20 services on it and haven't paid more than 6 euro since March 2019.

Jmail has crossed 450M pageviews, and our Vercel bill has exploded, even after tons of cache mitigation. Many kind people chipped in to cover the bill, but it’s not sustainable. What are solid, cheaper alternatives?

@brukername @Pirat_Nation The market leader is the market leader because the competition is retarded, not because of anything its doing to force that. You can't punish a marketplace because everyone else is stupid.

@Sven_Viking @Pirat_Nation I don’t know, I thought so before, but after talking with AI it says it includes non-steam key sales, that have nothing to do with steam. I should find primary sources but I’m not reading legal documents

@brukername @Pirat_Nation Is it possible they were sales on other platforms that included Steam keys? If not, yes that is monopolistic imho.

@Pettan_Enjoyer @Pirat_Nation Monopoly or not, i didn’t say, but the interesting fact is there’s a 75% market leader abusing their position to eliminate the best play competitor platforms can make, namely cheaper price.

@brukername @Pirat_Nation That's still not a monopoly. You can not sell on steam at all and entirely sell on Epic, the option is there so it's not a monopoly. It might be anti competitive but it's nowhere near the grounds for calling it a monopoly like some people are.

@Xythiera @MKobokerz No. Steam bullies devs that want to sell elsewhere for cheaper, because it protects their position. If you can’t compete on price, there’s no reason not to chose steam. The price includes 30% steam cut. Other platforms can’t give devs the same cut for a lower consumer price

@MKobokerz They do that to prevent scamming thats litterly industrie standart . Amazon does the same thing . No Plantform allows you to sell cheaper anywere els and Steam doesnt tell you to not lower prices they just want you to do give the lower prices to both partys .

A monopoly of choice. There are other options, players choose Steam. This narrative is pushed by other platforms that don't want to compete they want governments to interfere on their behalf not ours.

@Sven_Viking @Pirat_Nation Not sure. The Wolfire v Valve lawsuit has revealed internal emails as part of discovery, where steam reprimand publishers for selling cheaper on other platforms. This Reddit thread was made before that evidence was public

@Pirat_Nation It depends on how you define it (though it has some monopoly-like elements at least). One sticking point is related to price parity rules, which may actually turn out to involve a widespread developer misconception outside of the sale of actual Steam keys. reddit.com/r/pcgaming/com…

@Pettan_Enjoyer @Pirat_Nation They can’t «freely» sell elsewhere, because Valve will reprimand developers for selling at a lower price on other platforms. This is the core argument for steam being anti competitive

@Pirat_Nation They can freely sell elsewhere, steam isn't holding them hostage and forcing them to only release on steam. They can go to Epic, they can go to GOG, they can go to....I dunno fucking Uplay. This is by definition not a monopoly.

@Kagezod2 @SXR123 If steam takes a 30% cut, but my platform takes a 10% cut, that could allow games sold cheaper on my platform - but if the game is percieved to still have to be sold at $60 like on steam or violate a contract and have ur game pulled, customers won't move over to my platform.

I don't say this lightly but Steam is quite literally the only company I am okay with having this monopoly. There are so many ways they could use steam to generate more money. I see every opportunity for them to exploit their userbase and they choose not to. They have exceptional customer service, steam charts are public (something MANY companies would rather not be public to hide embarrassment), ludicrous deals for games several times a year, banning in-game ads, making it a requirement for developers to say whether or not they used AI, the mod support and steam workshop. The list goes on. Any gaming CEO would kill to have Steam and would promptly kill it within 5 years to appease share holders. Don't even get me started on the Gabecube (the new steam console). Steam single-handedly is holding PC gaming up and I never want anything to happen to it. Other companies can eat shit and learn to actually respect their customers like Valve and Steam do—but they won't, because that means not squeezing every dime possible out of your userbase.
